    The Elements LP (1974)

    Milestone Records

Joe Henderson was at the forefront of the 'spiritual jazz' scene having honed his skills in the late 60's under the tutelage of Jack McDuff, Horace Silver and Herbie Hancock. Recording quite often on the Milestone imprint, Joe was equally influenced by Sonny Rollins and Coltrane but never owing too much to either musician. His style was his own, graceful within a structure or mind blowing in a freeform setting. "The Elements" is comprised of four tracks, dedicated to Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Digging Tip #1: Cop any LP that has elemental titles, you're guaranteed at least one heater. Case in point, the track "Earth" is a restrained neck breaker with a slinky bassline accentuated by Alice Coltrane's Harp. Move over Dorothy, 'cause Alice has it locked down! Other players include Michael White, Ndugu Chancler and Charlie Haden. A must have for the spiritual fans.
