Prince - For You

  • Prince

    For You LP (1978)

    Warner Bros. Records

Ranked #198 in the Soul Strut 200

Along with Michael Jackson and James Brown, Prince is one of the most adulated artists here on Soul Strut.  If you search the archives you will find pages upon pages of threads analyzing the course of his career.  His debut For You is the album that started it all.  In true Prince fashion, he insisted on perfection testing the limits of Warner Brothers and hims management.  For a brand new artist debut, he moved studios 3 times, went over budget by $100,000, and played everything from guitar to moog synth.  For You was panned by critics but remains one of those albums that Soul Strutters "get" thanks to its slick brand of funky disco "Soft and Wet" (the demo version of this is a facemelter) and the gorgeously sexy modern soul cut  "My Love is Forever".    When the topic of Prince comes up at your next dinner party, name drop this gem and wait for the blank stares.
