Hey yall, I need some help from yall concerning the dark side of DJing.
I'm spinning a wedding in which the bride's family is from Jamaica.

I was wondering if yall can name some good Dub, reggae, and dancehall tunes that would go well...some lovey dubby stuff, stuff people can dance to, classic stuff, etc. I'm VERY clueless in this field.

Thanks to Day for helping me out tremendously. Very much appreciated.

I'm mp3 DJing half the music too, so if yall are on soulseek, hit me up, I'm sketcherone.

Thanks in advance yall.

sounds like the best possible scenario for DJing a wedding. i've DJed 3 and they all went really well, but with minimal reggae. here are a few suggestions:

Ken Boothe "Everything I Own"
Alton Ellis "I'm Still in Love With You"
Lloyd Charmers "Sweet Harmony"
Gregory Isaacs "Number One"
Carlton & the Shoes "Never Give Your Heart Away"
Desmond Dekker "007"
Desmond Dekker "Israelites"
Hopetown Lews "Take it Easy"
The Wailers "Simmer Down"
Maytals "54-46"
Tommy McCook "Liquidator"
Melodians "Rivers of Babylon"
Don Drummond "Man in the Street"
Mighty Diamonds "Right Time"
Mighty Diamonds "Why Me Black Brother Why"
Althia and Donna "Uptown Top Ranking"
Mad Cobra "Flex"

blucka blucka!

How old is the couple?

KL.

Hortense Ellis and Derick Morgan's version of Alton Ellis' "I'm Still in Love With YOu" melts 'em everytime. I don't know what you're going to find in MP3 form, though.

"Studio One Soul", a comp on Souljazz with soul standards interpreted by Jamaican artists, is packed with playable tunes.

"Do It Right" by the Clarendonians, "Take Me to the Dance" by the Bassies, and "Dancing Mood" by Someone Whose Name I Can't Think of Right Now are a few sweet numbers on the ska side of things.

"Your Love Gets Sweeter Everyday" by Finley Quaye is kinda Ja-fakin', but it has a nice warm sound. Delroy Wilson's "Better Must Come" is pretty sunny, too--a righteous Curtis Mayfield kind of vibe. Likewise, the Congos have that falsetto sweetness(sonically, anyway).

And you could always pick up that Blood and Fire "Darker Than Blue" comp to bridge the gap. US soul covered by JA singers--something for everyone.

Onna older dancehall tip, anything on the Stalag riddim:
Sister Nancy - Bam Bam, Tenor Saw - Ring de Alarm

If the young folks need some current stuff, it's everywhere now but don't front on Sean Paul's 'Get Busy', Wayne Wonder's 'No Turning Back', anything on that Diwali riddim to make the girls wine up the waist.

Second that Soul Jazz comp - is that the one with the Blood Sister's dub cover of 'Ring My Bell'? That's the jernt right there.

A couple more sure to go down well::

Toots and the Maytals - Funky Kingston (theres a stonking live version of this around)

Dave and Ansell Collins - That girl

Shinehead - Bille Jean

Sly & Robbie meet King Tubby - Lovers Dub

Jah Screechy - Walk and Skank (hold off on this one until they're well trolleyed)

No, that tune's in the "Reggae Disco" comp by Soul Jazz too. I'll second THAT comp!

whatever you do, don't play any version of "perfidia". one of my all time favourites, but the sentiment of the song might get you lynched.

Suggestions...

Jimmy Cliff 'Wonderful World, Beautiful People'
Al Brown And Skin Flesh And Bones 'Here I am Baby'
Susan Cadogan 'Fever'
Toots And The Maytals 'Take Me Home, Country Roads'
Toots And The Maytals 'Pressure Drop'
Eric Donaldson 'Cherry Oh Baby'
Max Romeo 'Wet Dream' (mebbe...)

And probably not the best idea (lyrically)...

any version of 'Chine Eye Gal/Carry Go Bring Come' or 'Stop That train'
K.C. White (or Dawn Penn) 'No, No, No'
Nora Dean 'Barb Wire'
Dawn Penn 'Are You There'

Or, indeed The Specials 'Too Much, Too Young'

And Wayne McGhie 'Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye' is probably another one to avoid, come to think of it...

she really needs to wash her mouth out with soap and water!

BTW - Have you heard Nora's "Scorpion" - basically an early 70s remake of Barbwire - ie. substitute the title in the lyrics - but done in a more bass heavy dub style (with a version on the flip I think)

- I need to get a copy meself!
