CAIN, HENRY - Funky Organization of Henry Cain

During the David Axelrod craze this was a 2nd or 3rd tier record collectors would check for because Axelrod produced it. I thought The Funky Organization of Henry Cain would be your typical run of the mill organ Jazz album, and in many ways it is, but there are a couple times when Cain surprised me.
CHANDLER, GENE - Situation

Gene Chandler is best known for his 1962 Doo Wop classic Duke Of Earl. His career was much longer than that one song. Chandler was a mainstay of the Chicago Soul scene, and Situation was one of his more successful albums because of the hit Groovy Situation.
CHARLES, RAY - A Message From The People

Ray Charles recorded A Message From The People with his longtime friend Quincy Jones. Charles gets off to a great start with a completely re-arranged and soulful version of Lift Every Voice And Sing. Two mellower numbers, Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong and Heaven Help Us All, follow that.
GAYE, MARVIN - Marvin Gaye And His Girls

This album collects together Marvin Gaye’s recordings with Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells and Kim Weston. There are four tracks with each female artist. The songs with Wells are a little too mellow. It Takes Two with Weston finally kicks things off with its fast pace.

CHARLES, RAY - Genius Hits The Road

Genius Hits The Road is a Ray Charles’ classic for one simple reason. It contains Georgia On My Mind, the richly orchestrated yet heart felt ode to the Southern state.
HENDRIX, JIMI - Free Spirit

There are two budget label releases of Hendrix’s material called Free Spirit, this one and one on Accord. This was the first of the two.
COBHAM, BILLY - A Funky Thide Of Sings

A Funky Thide Of Sings has drummer Billy Cobham in full Fusion mode. He is able to maintain the Funk though, much more than other Jazz albums from the same time.
CRUSADERS - Scratch

Scratch was a live album recorded at the Roxy in LA. The title track has a Sly Stone influence to it with a slap bass line. That’s followed by a long and airy version of Eleanor Rigby with some spacey sounds on the keys by Joe Sample.
GASCA , LUIS - Born To Love You

Born To Love You opens with a cover of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. An original open bass line by John Heard starts the song off and would make a nice loop. Even better is the grinding rhythm on Dr. Gasca.
ROBINSON, JACKIE - I’m Different

I first heard of Jackie Robinson through the UBB series. Her song Pussyfooter was included on one of the earlier issues of the series.
BELL, ARCHIE & THE DRELLS - Count The Ways/Dancing To Your Music

Count The Ways starts off with a nice drum break before going into some Psych influenced Funk with echoing vocals and a nice bass line. The break and the drugged out vocals return again at the very end of the song.
8TH DAY - 8th Day

8th Day were three singers from Detroit who were put together by the super-writing group, Holland-Dozier-Holland after they’d left Motown Records and created their own labels, Invictus and Hot Wax.
