I got access to the entire WGBH Archive
So, some of you may remember the occasional brief mention of my efforts over the last several months to liberate old performance footage from our Archive here at WGBH. While I haven't been able to get the ball rolling on getting this footage digitized and commercially available, I now have access to the entire archive.

I'm going to start viewing a ton of old footage in my free time, but there are a few issues:
First, while some things are available on VHS, most of it is on 3/4" tape.

I can get them dubbed to DVD, but at the cost of $30 per transfer. That's pretty steep, especially considering a show like Say Brother has something like 1000+ episodes.
Second, the Archive index contains very little information. Meaning, if I'm looking for the episode with The Impressions performing, I pretty much have to stumble over it through blind luck. And at $30 a pop, that's an expensive fishing exhibition.
Here's a screenshot of the Archive index:

My question to you fine folks is, how would you go about finding the good stuff without blowing ridiculous amounts of money on 3/4"-DVD transfers that may or may not contain anything of value? Keep in mind, I don't have access to a U-Matic 3/4" tape player to vet these things before getting them transferred.

Right? I've checked on eBay and I could probably score one for a few hundred bucks, if I get lucky.
On another note, does anyone remember a ten-part PBS documentary from 1995 called Rock and Roll? It looks pretty dope. Might have start with that. Well, that and the 1968 James Brown concert at Boston Garden.

Yeah, Rock and Roll was pretty cool, but nowhere near as enticing as some of the other shit you must be able to get your hands on with this situation. I have the book that accompanied the Rn'R series. I seem to remember there being videotapes available even. I could be wrong.
The "Say Brother" stuff is intriguing. I have fond memories of seeing plenty of off-the-map stuff on their for the first time, growing up in GBH territory.
Keep us posted on what you dig up.

Actually, we have all of the original footage. Meaning, instead of a snippet of a Gamble and Huff interview, we have the whole reel of tape. Those are labeled "original footage," though, so I don't know if they'll let me borrow or transfer it.
And if anyone has any suggestions of things I should be looking for, please let me know. I'm all about the Say Brother stuff, and it's easy to search terms like "soul" and "funk," but there's got to be tons of stuff I'm missing out on because I just don't know it exists. I tried "Stark Reality" and didn't come up with anything, even though you know Stark Reality performed on Say Brother. Tricky stuff.
And Boston heads—who's down for a viewing party? A lil' booze, a lil' green, and some ridiculously rare footage?

Re: I got access to the entire WGBH Archive
I'm surprised WGBH doesn't have a transfer suite. The transfer costs at camera shops are big rip-offs. A photographer friend of mine worked in various camera shops in CT and showed me how they do the transfers, it's easy as hell and pretty much all profit. You just set it & forget it. For something this monumental an investment in equipment would certainly be your best bet. Buy a good machine from a reputable dude, you don't want to be chewing up or damaging these tapes on some cheap joint offa eBay! That and a little video capture usb thingy and you can record the prime stuff and edit it later, make DVD's, whatever. I'll be first in line!

Eh, all our cameramen and engineers buy their equipment offa ebay. It's a pretty big market, actually.
GBH, if you want some help taping betas to DVD, I can do some late night. Hell, I already made Ty a 'best of 60s,' go-go comp under the K family's nose. just holler, and we can try to work something out. That james brown concert is so necessary.

And you're away.
Failing that, try and get friendly with any local indiefilm people, or film schools. They may have pro dubbing equipment that you'll be able to use for free. If you're really lucky, you might even find someone interested enough, to help you with this mammoth task.

Re: I got access to the entire WGBH Archive
When I was a news producer a few years ago, we had nothing but 3/4" machines up until I was "let go" in 2001, and they were pretty much held up by Scotch tape and rubber bands. Not really, but the engineers there refused to throw them out or buy new/refurbished machines because of the archives. I'm not sure if anyone has since converted everything to digital, but I doubt it.
I still have a number of 3/4" tapes of stuff that I edited for broadcast, or my tape of stupid footage that I had hoped to use for DJ sets (such as Ronald McDonald at a disco, or a lady making a butter sculpture of a cow, and EPK's that aren't meant for broadcast which might feature someone saying some stupid shit.)
Anyway, as for the WGBH archive:

If it comes to a point in my life where I have to make "last wishes", I want to slide down that Zoom "M". I might fall in half way down, but I'm alright with this.

Be very careful 3/4 is a horrible format .. prone to head clogs, drop outs and deterioration .. you may only get one shot with some of these 35 year old tapes ..dvds are a very compressed format , so you should dump the 3/4's to something with a higher ressolution and sound i. e. dvcam , digi-beta, hard drive .. if you do buy a 3/4 deck , learn to clean the heads and make sure you get an engineer to give it a once over before you put you treasures in there...hopefully there are mutiple masters out there ....good luck sounds like a righteous project

Well, this is really more of an effort just to make the material available. But it's a guerilla-style deal, and I'm not trying to get fired for bootlegging, you know? We do have audio tape for some things, but unfortunately, we didn't produce Sesame St., so we don't have the tapes for it. All the stuff we have the masters for is stuff we produced.
Can I interest you in a tape of kitchen sound effects from Simply Ming?

My dad would go apeshit for the entire Victory Garden back catalog.
Have you searched any artist appearances on the New Television Workshop? I was only up on this show very late in the game, but there were a lot of experimental artists that performed on the show, going back into the 70s.

No, but if you have an autographed 8x10" glossy of him, my wife would love to get it for Christmas. She's on his nuts in a major way. She's convinced he's gay and is romantically involved with Todd English? Can you shed any light/dirt on that? Wifey would love to have the issue settled.

This would be awesome. Def, pick up a 3/4" player. I see them super cheap at antique spots from time to time. It'd be real cool if the strut could get together on this and pitch in for a storage drive to get these videos transfered to a high quality dvd format.

Have you searched any artist appearances on the New Television Workshop? I was only up on this show very late in the game, but there were a lot of experimental artists that performed on the show, going back into the 70s.
I'm looking through right now, but all I've found so far is a bunch of weird shit like "Lotte Goslar's Pantomime Circus"

Yeah, it's definately heavier on the performance art/video/dance side of things, but they had some pretty interesting musical guests too. I did a little research and was able to dig up this John Cage episode: http://openvault.wgbh.org/ntw/MLA000318/index.html. I know there's more of that sort of thing to be found, though. It's not gonna give Say Brother a run for it's money or anything, but it might have some gems.
p.s. I also came across this must-see footage: http://openvault.wgbh.org/saybrother/MLA001372/index.html

I can't find that John Cage footage (the archive can be quite difficult to search), but I did come across this craziness:
"Collisions – Unaired Drama Comedy by Lily Tomlin & Jane Wagner starring Dan Ackroyd, Gilda Radner, Prof. Irwin Correy – PBS"
The television equivalent of many, many, many, many rare unreleased acetates?
That Say Brother episode with Melvin van Peebles and Dick Gregory is available, but only on 3/4" tape. We'd need to pay for a transfer, or find someone with a U-Matic to watch it.

So, it appears we've hit some delays in the transfer process. However, I picked up a VCR on the cheap, so viewing this stuff is still possible. I'm thinking of having a lil viewing while Dave from Friends of Sound is in town. PMs will be sent to Boston Headz. Holler if you're interested and I missed you on the PM!

Re: I got access to the entire WGBH Archive
So, we've got myself, Jaymack, Lambert, DJCoolHands, and KitchenKnight down for next Tuesday, with no word yet from SOI or PJ. I live in Allston right near the Harvard Ave. stop on the B Line, and the 66 bus goes right by my apartment. I know some of y'all will have to travel a bit, so how's 7 p.m. for err-body?
Also, is anyone vegetarian? ’Cause I'm thinking Soul Fire for food. Everything there is incredible, but they don't cater much to herbivores.

Nice. I'll be interested to know how Soul Fire compares to that joint in Mattapan, Pit Stop, that you were recommending a while back. Haven't tried it yet—Mattapan is a bit out of the way for me, but I'm willing to go out of my way for good BBQ.

You mean my palatial Allston penthouse? Yes, indeed. I'll holler at everybody individually and nail down directions for each of you. Hell, I might even put together a quick map in photoshop if I get bored at work. And that's a significant possibility.
For reference for those attending, my spot is about 6-7 blocks from the Harvard Ave. stop on the B (Green) line. The 66 bus, which goes through Harvard Sq., also stops directly in front of my apartment, as does the 57. Driving is easy as well, but I don't encourage drinking and driving. But I do encourage drinking.

Alright err-body. The plan is to meet tomorrow night (Tuesday) at Soul Fire at 7 p.m., grab some BBQ and a beer or three, then head back to my spot. I'm PMing you all now with info on directions, etc. I'm at work now (despite the fact that we have a snow day), but will be leaving shortly, so I won't have ’Strut access for the rest of the day. Well, I didn't get jaymack's pm in time and just showed up at the place with beers in hand. I called the man to see if you guys had gotten back from soul fire, when he let me know it got cancelled. I was just like "I'm phoning you from your front steps", and he invited me up. Coolhands came through about an hour later, just in time for the "best of spring" show.
So to summarize, the viewing was incredible once you got past the "smug rigidities" of WGBH.
Plus, now I can say I got my mother fucking serato at turntable lab.

Well, things did come together, albeit at the last minute with half the original cast. I believe we learned a few things:
1) George Clinton sweats a lot when he's on acid. 2) The Original Untouchables are awesome. Corollary question: Who the fuck are The Original Untouchables? 3) Jazz poet Robert Ruff sucks. Who is Robert Ruff? Nobody you want to know about. 4) People don't talk shit about the TV station they work for like they did back in the day.
And D*n learned how to say "I got my motherfucking serato at turntablelab" on Soulstrut. All around, a productive night.
Jaymack, KitchenKnight, and SoulOnIce all get a time out for flaking. Remember all:

It's all good. You were only 90% sure to begin with, but I lumped you in there anyway ’cause it's easier to paint with broad strokes. I ain't mad, doggie. You were right about that Parliament performance, though.

Nope - were they local?
Because the Ohio Untouchables were the early version of the Ohio Players, there could possibly be some connection, or maybe even one of those things where they were made to add the "Original" to their name because of the Ohio group?
Hopefully I will see this footage at the second viewing party ... ?

Hmm. I didn't get an Ohio Players vibe, but it was 1969, so they could have developed into that sound later. It was from the spring special that was all musical performances, so I imagine we will be watching that again next time around. We talked through much of it, so I could certainly stand another viewing.

Re: I got access to the entire WGBH Archive
I've been googling these dudes, and they have a release with Bonnie Floyd, and guess what label it's on.....
Big Yellow.
The riddle gets deeper, but this fact points to these guys being a local act.
BTW/ I could only find releases with them backing Bonnie Floyd, so perhaps it may be a different group entirely. On another release they go just as "The Untouchables".
Still, though, you all need to see that footage! A blazer for sure!

I just checked it out, and we don't have any copies in the archive. We usually only archive our own productions, so it's most likely only in the archive of WNET Thirteen in NY.
As an update on this for all y'all, there are copyright issues in the dubbing process. If only there were someone who had VHS to DVD and 3/4" tape to DVD dubbing capabilities, and you know, the copyrights were clear. It would be Prime Material for Music Efficianados. Did I spell that right? I think I did.
