    Soul Strut 100: # 3 - Cymande (1972)

Otis_Funkmeyer said:I think of Cymande as kind of a benchmark. Like if you don't know about them, your knowledge has not ventured beyond the mainstream at all. And if you have, you've at least taken the first step of searching for funk/soul that doesn't get radio play. Like if digging were a...

    Soul Strut 100: # 7 - Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

Snapping said:Off The Wall vs. Thriller = Revolver vs. Sgt. Pepper? 'Revolver' wins that battle hands down; OTW vs Thriller is nowhere near as clear cut. (Now if Sgt. Pepper would've included the "Strawberry Fields"/"Penny Lane" single as originally intended...then we're closer in...

    Soul Strut 100: # 7 - Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

    Soul Strut 100: # 7 - Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

HarveyCanal said: What used to be a certain understanding and appreciation of Off the Wall has over the years given way to unnerving visions of bad dancing by cheesy white girls. So the reason you don't like 'Off the Wall' anymore is because of its universal appeal? (which includes...

Soul Strut 100: #19 - Eugene McDaniels - Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse

I think we can all agree on this monster. It's spot in the Top 20 is well deserved (it could even be higher, but we'll see what remains ahead of it.) My favorite track is "Lovin' Man":

Great record from start to finish. "Past, Present and Future" is still hard as coffin nails. Demon Fuzz - 01 Past, present and future - afrofunkamelick from afrofunkamelick on Vimeo.

    Soul Strut 100: # 25 - Nas - Illmatic

crabmongerfunk said: that ahmad jamal sample is brilliant. firstly, it's such an odd, obscure thing to have sampled (2 bars of a very long, florid piano solo) and it was cut and looped in a way that was ultra creative. more importantly, the piano is what gives that track momentum and it never...

    Soul Strut 100: # 25 - Nas - Illmatic

Too low! Top 10 for me. All killer, no filler. Nas at his very best, and Pete Rock, Premier, Extra P, and Q-Tip all at the height of their powers delivering golden beat after golden beat. It was like all creative forces involved were in a contest to out-do each other on the quality scale...

    Soul Strut 100: # 27 - Donald Byrd - Places and Spaces

YES. The Mizell Brothers are my heroes! You can't really go wrong with any of the Mizell/Byrd records from this period, but this and 'Stepping Into Tomorrow' are particularly special. Byrd and Fonce Mizell are alive and well in my crates!
