Might have missed this thread cus its strange this hasnt been brought up.... If this has been raised already can someone link me to the OG thread (I did do a search but nuthing came up)....

juts copped the new MOJO issue...I was suporised by some of the albums mentioned... although Inner Visions as No1 is a decent choice.... alot of the usual suspects and a few leftfielders IMO....

On the Curtis Mayfield cheerleading tip...he only made it to number 20...that was a bit of a shock..you'd think he'd be in the top five.... and they had some disco joints in there (Donna Summers) which shouldnt be in the list IMO....or they shoulda called it the the funk/jazzfusion/psychedlic/disco soul albums list :-)

these lists are so oppressive for some reason.

mostly safe picks i guess but there are def. a few mindgarten choices such as "there is it is" by james brown.

that list is wack, some points for consideration/discussion....

Nasty Gal is arguably the weakest Betty Davis LP?

Syreeta???? really??? that LP sucks.

one of those Wilson Picketts on RCA might have been stronger than In Philadelphia

overall it's getting too close to disco for me on a lot of those LPs

Agreed that the JB & Jacksons choices are odd......

actually yeah now that I actually get past the knee jerk & think about it, that's probably as good as any of his 70s studio LPs

So what...exactly is wack about the list? Forget - for a moment - the ranking and just go with their overall inclusions. What's egregiously missing? Or what's egregiously included (Syreeta aside)?

I"m not being aggro about asking this, I'm just curious what people think is so fucked up.

Right off the bat, it should be noted that they decided NOT to repeat any artist. I understand why they might have decided that but it does create some "eggs in one basket" situations that'd be up for considerable debate ("Innervisions" vs. "Songs in the Key of Love" for example).

I think to their credit in the issue whenever they listed an album they put s lil "also see:........" under it so you really get 140 or so recommendations. Thats where I see lists helping, I mean they usually piss off the choir in some way, and its fun to discuss the lists from a pov of a collector/listener/follower of these artists/genres..

but the litmus test of a list like this is if somone had never heard/listened/collected this type of music (or if you fall back to the day you first 'discovered' soul/funk/groove etc) would this list be a just and useful tool in expanding your knowledge/insight into this field. And despite a few personal selections I woud have or not made I think it does a decent job.

My only really issue is they did have a 'too broad' scope which allows for LPs that you would consider strickly 'SOUL' to be included.... but that is a hard one to contain cus we all know there was alot of artists that mixed genres/styles on albums...

Now lets get to the record bragging part of the equation....who amongst you has ALL 70 in the crates (extra points if you got doubles) hehehehe

I wont front I probably own around 40 of those listed---

not sure which makes less sense:

that there's exactly 1 Parliament album on the list or that that album is Motor Booty Affair...

Just quickly...

Missing:

The Impressions

The Stylistics

Gene Chandler Situation

Chi-Lites

Blue Magic

All Directions is prob the better Temptations choice

Etta James - Come A Little Closer prob deserves to be there instead of something included

Lyn Collins - Think

Freda Payne

Jean Knight - Mr Big Stuff

The Meters

some stuff that could probably go:

Syreeta

Jacksons

Donna Summer

Chaka Khan.... maybe switch with a Rufus LP

Eddie Hinton

Shaggie Otis

if you include Shuggie Otis (and some other names listed there) , then you HAVE TO include as well:

The Pointer Sisters - S/T

Bobby Blue Bland - Dreamer

Edwin Starr - Hell Up in Harlem

Diana Ross/ The Supremes S/T

Leon Ware - Musical Massage

Mike James Kirkland - Doin it right

Marlena Shaw - Spice of Life OR Live at Montreaux

The Four Tops - Keeper of the Castle

The Dramatics - Whatcha see is Whatcha get

Detroit Emeralds - I'm in love with you

Upchurch/Tennyson - S/T

Leon Thomas - Full Circle

etc etc

P.s. Co sign on Etta James' Come a little Closer

I thought t3h Strut would be pleased at the inclusion of "Headless".

Which, imho, doesn't warrant inclusion.

I think it's not a bad list though. There is a lot of talent on that list.

LOL @ Millie Jackson > Michael Jackson

I may be wrong but I think Barbara Mason 's "give me your love" is on Buddah

Yes it is, I meant any more albums, sorry. In my own list would be "Sharing" by Vitamin E, "It's Rough out There" by Modulations or "Still Bill" by Bill Withers.

I would also add "Peaceful" by Al Johnson (Marina) or "Hutson" by Leroy Hutson (Curtom). But depends on tastes at all. But I think that Curtis' best is "There's no place Like America today" without any question.
