Southern Rap Classics

The Oliver's book link got me thinking...It took some time and actually living in the south to turn around my NY-Rapcentricity. Now, I genuinely enjoy the sub-genre, but I feel like my knowledge is only scraping the surface. I know UGK, Three 6 Mafia, Geto boys, Outkast, Cash Money, No Limit, but what are some other examples of Southern Rap classics.

For instance, what is the must have 8ball/MJG album?
Are there any Lil'/Big named folks I might have overlooked? Etc.

I know this is 5 or more years late, but better late than never.

There are two: their debut, Comin' Out Hard, and their elder statesmen album, 1999's In Our Lifetime.

Not much to debate there, although deej will probably come in talking about Space Age 4 Eva or some such foolishness.

i agree with this. but 'buck bounce' on space age 4 eva is one of my favorite 8ball & mjg songs.

The Convicts S/T isnt on the same level as Scarface - Mr. Scarface Is Back.

Can we not name every damn Southern record pleez.

I have to admit these guys kinda suck but when Three 6 Mafia had all the founding members in the click they were tight especially the production.

Can we not name every damn Southern record pleez. It's SoulStrut--it's an inevitability. The question of what the best albums are in a given genre is always met with a list of every album that is even remotely related to that genre.

Although it may not be championed by the masses I'd say this song is a classic.



If you dig the Dungeon Family then you should check out Parental Advisory's second and third albums. They may not have any 'classics' but after splitting from the Dungeon they recorded some solid music. Their albums employ many of the same session musicians that are featured on Kast and Goodie albums.
