Hey,I was just listening to "Alvina" by John Handy (the source of Diamond's "F*ck What You Heard"; I named this one because it's in the CDs liner notes), and thought to myself, "this is a nice song." It got me to wondering about what songs would 'Strutters report as their top-10 (favorite) original songs sampled for hip-hop classic joints (not some obscure joint that two people know about). The criteria for selection should be the quality of the entire original song and not just the sampled part that you like, and you can refer the source of breaks, loops, chops, etc. Also, try not to snitch on anyone who didn't clear the joint if you can help it. Here are my top-five (in no particular order):
1. "Uzuri"-Catalyst.
2. "Born to be Blue"-Jack Bruce.
3. "Mango Meat"-Mandrill.
4. "Together"-Cannonball Adderley Quintet.
5. "Playing Your Game, Baby"-Barry White.
6. "Easin' In"-Edwin Starr ("Hell Up in Harlem" OST).
7. "Hung Up on My Baby"-Isaac Hayes ("Tough Guys" OST).
8. "Heather"-Billy Cobham.
9. "Kool is Back"-Funk, Inc.
10. "Seed of Love"-Little Boy Blues.
