bob shads label (especially the 1970s ones with the red lion) seems to get little to no respect from anyone i have ever known but i think that some of the best jazz/fusion sets of the 70s can be found on it. maybe this is sort of a useless thread but i am trying hard to avoid reality. rep your fave mainstream titles. heres my top 6

1. curtis fuller-crankin
2. buddy terry-awareness
3. roy haynes-senyah
4. frank foster-loud minority
5. mike longo-the awakening (hard as fuck
6. hal galper-wild bird

Blue Mitchell had some really nice records on Mainstream. Blue's Blues, Graffiti Blues.

Alice Clark is by far my favourite LP on mainstream. But the fairly cheap leon huff lp is also quite good to me.

Indeed it is.

Also love the staple Afrique - soul mokossa LP.

Oh, and I have 2 realy good Charles Kynard LPs on Mainstream too.

Dude, no doubt - Mainstream is an amazing label.

Can't forget that they were in many ways the premier psychedelic
label in the late 60's - they put out tons of the stuff,
and many of the most sought after and best psych albums are
on Mainstream. I called Mainstream a "jazz label" around a bunch
of 50 year old rock headz and they looked at me like I had two heads!

I am always finding oddball stuff on Mainstream, weird 45's, etc.

A cool one I copped lately that I never hear about is "King Kong"
by the Electric Ladies on 45 from 1974 - raw fuzztone funky girl
group sound that is heavy and soulful.

There's also a budget LP with an ugly ass cover of floating guitars
that has some heat on it - tracks from Jack Wilkins, Jay Berliner, etc.
If you find it, it will be $2 - and well worth copping.

You are forgetting the most sought after Mainstream lp,
ALICE CLARK!
Except for the 3rd reply above.

And Alice Clark is far from the most sought after Mainstream LP,
although it is up there.

not freddie but dave hubbard who played on classic lonnie liston smith records has his first album on mainstream, with albert dailey on electric piano, has acouple funky tunes

Don't forget this dude:

His Version of "Red Clay" kills me. First time I heard it, my spine locked up. "Sucka Nigga" was always one of my favorite Tribe songs, but when I heard the original I was like. "FUK!"

Ooops me no read so good.
Alice Clark consistantly goes for $100-$200.
What other Mainstream lp goes for that much?

Popsike just answered that question, looks like there
are various Pysh lp's on the earlier Mainstream (pre-lion logo)
that fetch some serious $$$. I kinda forgot about non-jazz
stuff on Mainstream, good to know though, if I ever come
across any of those titles in the field for cheap.

earlier Mainstream Psych stuff is really where it's at:

The Maze
Orient Express
Nucleus

I honestly thought all that came out on this label was jazz.
Learn something new everyday.

they had very good runs of both psych and avant garde/electronic records before the switch to red lion/funky jazz stuff.

And they had some great jazz reissues in the 60's of classic swing-era
stuff. One of my most cherished swing LP's is a collection of Chu Berry
session work called "Sittin' In" on Mainstream. Those 60's jazz repops
had great covers, too.
