Old movies you've only seen recently...

If we're talking funny recent movies I have a hearty recommendation for Hundreds of Beavers. Get familiar Frank. Actually I have no idea if you'd like it, but I loved it. It was like a feature length carnage-filled classic Donald Duck cartoon, basically.

The mentioning of Apple Cider in a googled review had me download this right away. Minus points for the 2 cup holder hat, which almost made me quit prematurely, but I'm glad I didn't. Worked exceptionally well in concert with the thc vape I bought the other day.

Wtichfinder General - this could have gone in the horror movies thread, but it's old and i only just saw it

It's a really well made b-movie. The plot is gutter - about couple of wtich hunters up against true love - and very violent. Somehow the cinematography is brilliant with a miraculous score. riyl The Wicker Man.

I tried watching Batman Returns from 1992 with the penguin and catwoman but good lord it’s boring. I haven’t seen it since high school.

Beat The Devil written and directed by John Huston with additional writing by Truman Capote and Billy Wilder. Apparently the script was thrown out at the start of filming and the latter two were brought in to write fresh dialogue each day (?). Humphrey Bogart acting his ass off in a weird little farce. Entertaining!

I had never seen The Spook Who Sat By The Door, and it's fantastic. The way it slowly builds into the revolutionary chaos it ends with. Great acting! I should read the book.

Was hard to track down a good quality copy, but looks like it's been restored so will hopefully be easier to see moving forward.

maybe more important is that Herbie did a blazing score - was it ever released officially on LP?

oh also rewatched Brick recently and it holds up, not just as good noir but great film/story. dark af.

I was watching lone wolf and cub (but not for the first time) and that little kid is so cute I wondered what happened to him and guess what?
He’s been in prison for murder since 1999!!!

Wow, I never heard about that. Not the same, but it brings to mind the child actor in "Pixote" (great film, but very depressing) who was killed by the police seven years later.

My brother gifted me a year's subscription to the Criterion Channel. One of the films he suggested was "House Of Games": David Mamet's directorial debut which is a peek into the lives and "skills" of conmen, which stars one of my favorites, Joe Mantegna, and the great Ricky Jay.

yeah, Pixote remains one of the realest movies i've seen.

i don't think i've seen House of Games... Spanish Prisoner is my fav of his directed films. Steve Martin typecast *chef's kiss*

recently watched Orson Welles' The Stranger for the first time. it was underwhelming. i mean, great story and it kept me guessing, but there was some baffling editing and i didn't really rate Welles acting.
