SoundCloud to begin advertising and subscription based services

Yep. Soundcloud sold out. I guess they've been operating on heavy loses, and are facing pressure from majors threatening to sue over copyright issues. Both of which are understandable.

Still. I'm pretty skeptical of this. They're talking about how the ads won't annoy users because "they know the artists and content creators are getting paid." I think that's bullshit. Users don't care. They want music. That's it. If they cared about it enough they would buy the album or go see a show.

Feels like a very vibrant and independent community is going to be eclipsed by top down music commercialism. The big labels have the $ to pay for ads and feature spots. That influence can't be positive for the small music creators that have basically built the site up from the beginning.

Thoughts?
