My brother and main digging partner is moving to Turkey for a couple years! Pretty random but I figured I better start upping my knowledge on Turkish Jazz/Psych/Funk etc.. Hit me with some heat Strut!
Any advice on digging spots or even non record related advice would also be appreciated. He'll be based in Ankara.

Come across a good few of them before, Manco, Selda, Erkin Koray, Ozkent etc but I'll check the rest.





And yes.. Im aware I could have just googled it (I actually did before I posted) coming here was as much about getting some advice on where to find records over there, general advice on how he might make the most of his time, or even the opportunity to meet some like minded folk there.


Besides, the Stut are usually pretty good at putting people up on stuff that might not show up on the first couple pages of a google search.

jus...in istanbul, the records are out there. i saw every single record that i would have liked to find. but the prices are steep. unless you do a lot of listening and find less championed sounds, you are gonna have to get real lucky or stay out of record stores.

Hes going to be there for at least 2 years (option to stay a third) Hes hoping to learn the language and is definitely willing to put the work in as far as the digging goes. I have no doubt he'll turn up some great records (although I'm under no illusions the Baris Manco rares are everywhere over there)





Just out of curiosity, when you say the records are expensive over there.. expensive by our ebay standards? There are some titles Id pay good money for if I thought I was getting a bit of a bargain..

you actually do see baris rares and all the rest. but yes, just as expensive as ebay. turks are rarely sleeping on ebay and international markets. i grossly fucked up by not picking up a vg baris 2023 LP for $60. doh

When I was in turkey I had the most luck just meeting with a dude who was selling on eBay... Picked up some 45s for a decent price





Think of it as just buying online but saving on postage- as everyone's said, the days of picking up turkish rock on the cheap are gone... The sellers all know what everyone is looking for now





That being said if you're/they're in Istanbul check Zihni Muzik on the Asian side (Kadikoy) it's like a one stop shop, everything is itemised in a printout so you don't need to get your fingers dirty. Baris Manco 45s were around the 50TL mark

I've often found that what people in shops and ebay describe as Turkish Psych, isn't psych at all, it's just what Turkish music sounded like in the 60s & 70s. There's a lot of tat out there and these days, most of the Turkish dealers are well up on prices so you'd be doing very well to turn up any cheapies as it's been a well worn path by "Western" collectors over the last 10 years or so.





I have a house in Bodrum and have spent time in Istanbul a few times trying to dig out decent stuff, but haven't bought even 1 record as yet. Good luck in your adventures!!

A former colleague of mine is from Istanbul and his dad owns an antique shop on the Asian side. Whenever he goes back to visit he'll skype me and go through whatever is in the crates at his dad's shop. Every now and then there is some great stuff (including the above LP).
