Apart from color: Why all these telephones? I mean it was an pretty old technology. How does it embedd into the otherwise futuristic aesthetics used in that era?

Hey Disco Che.. maybe it had to do with the cold-war 80's red telephone "hot-line" aspect? Maybe the red telephone associated with presidential prestige or something to that affect.. I dunno..
