2005.5: favorite new albums of the year so far

112 - Pleasure & Pain
synthesized r&b? yes please
mindless sex jams? yes please
occasional "deep" song? sure, why not

Bobby Valentino - S/T
synthesized r&b? yes please
mediocre vocals? no thanks
false advertisement on hot luda single? no thanks
something to bump when females ride in the car? check

I think I've officially outgrown my underground hip-hop phase.
and checking Bobby Valentino and 112 albums is an improvement?

Boyz N Da Hood - S/T
Young Jeezy? yes please (no homo)
Puffy capitalizing on Southern explosion? no thanks
"Happy Jamz"? yeas please
typical southern gangsta tracks? no thanks
typical southern synth beats? no thanks
Really disappointing record. I don't know, I guess Puff was on some cheap shit with the production.

Straight Outta A-Town, their tape with DJ Drama, was much better.

people actually check for puff diddy records? haha
Puffy didn't really have anything to do with that one besides put the Badboy South logo on it and--I assume--put up some of the money.

All four of those guys were already established in Atlanta, and Puff wasn't even the person whose idea it was to put them together into a supergroup.

Edan - Beauty & The Beat
Quas - The Further Adventures
Mall & Dre - The US Open

More will come to mind I'm sure...

Beret - Arco-iris (jappy jap vocals over great brazilian production)

bataan_joe~_callmynam_101b.jpg

Joe Bataan - Call My Name (hasn't lost one bit of soul in his vocal delivery)

elektro4~~~_keystroke_101b.jpg

Elektro4 - Keystroke One (what rjd2 tries but fails miserably. BRAZING PSYCH DOWNTEMPO)

silhouette_brown2_rgb.jpg

Silhouette Brown - s/t (Dego of 4 hero & Kaidi of Bugz together, a good combination)

KSCL-828.jpg

Breakthrough - s/t (if you like dj mitsu, this is very similar)

the faith album is pretty good too, considering I had zero expectations. Otherwise it's been a slow year for lps, especially in rock.

I heart Aser's musical tastes.

I just peeped some of the Joe Bataan today and I was really impressed by it. I'm just waiting for the Groove Merchant to have some copies.

word on the Silhouette Brown. I think it's kinda getting slept on because it's getting shelved in the "broken beat" section so new-soul dj's arent' checking for it.

I need to check that Breakthrough, I think Groveman Sport did a remix and I really dug the Martian Gang 12'' he did.

Anyone else feeling this?

I kinda slept when it first dropped, but I was rocking it at work the other day and it sounded pretty nice.
anyone know if Sever MSK did that album cover? looks like it.

yes, i've become frustrated with the pretentiousness of underground hip-hop, and thus, have decided to turn to mainstream rap & r&b, which are just as pretentious, but hey, at least they sound like they're having fun...

for real though, i've actually gotten into a rut as far as finding new music that i really, really dig. matter of fact, just finding albums that make me want to listen more than twice is a chore too. i don't know if my tastes are just changing, or if the music that's coming out nowadays is that bad. probably a combination of both.

anyways, diggin' for earlier rap, r&b, soul, funk, jazz, rock, etc. is holdin' me over til i find my shit again.

i did mean that shit about hip hop being too pretentious nowadays though, even though it's really been that way since the beginning.
