Anyone planning to get a Kindle Fire? Thoughts?

Yeah, that's why I ended up buying it -- so easy on the eyeballs. Never even thought about buying one until I ran across a demo model at Target and was converted with the quickness.

Another thing I wanted to mention that is crucial to my Kindle is the website Longform, which aggregates long-form journalism and then allows you to send the articles -- via a Wifi network, not Amazon's 3G -- straight to your device. They have a button for it and I send loads of articles straight there and it so great!

I was given a Kindle this summer and it was great reading on the road -- the e-ink really does save your eyes, no glare, no squinting. Ambient light reflects off it into your eyes, like a book, rather than another screen pumping photons at you. The other great thing is how it holds a charge, you can easily go 60 hours plus without recharging, the only electrical activity is when you turn a page.

Meh. If I was already a member of Amazon Prime, I'd be into it. But I'm looking at it as an $80 fee to have access to up to 12 ebooks per year. Currently their selection only includes around 5000 books (mostly self-published titles or those published by Amazon and affiliates as the big publishers aren't interested at the moment).

Here's an article.

I'll keep an eye on it, but so far this doesn't even match what my public library offers for free.

It's worth paying for Amazon Prime if you buy a lot from them. I love the free 2-day or $4 overnight shipping, although it is making me spend twice as much $ on impulses, like random puzzles or an electric sander : /

amazon prime shipping is not valid in hawaii and i doubt i'll use the streaming music and video shit. i easily spend 80+ on books a year so that's why i found the library thing attractive. of course i've actually read up on it beyond the hype article on the amazon site and unless more publishers jump on, it won't really be worth it for me.

I think almost all 10" tablets are doodoo compared to an iPad but there is a new version of the Nexus 10 coming out later this year if you want to wait.

I still recommend the nexus 7 though, its pretty rad.

I think it's pretty hard to argue with this, and I say that as someone who likes Android phones.

What are you planning to use the tablet for, rootless?

I'm taking a trip and wanna read e-books b/w watch movies.

I know both can be done on a Kindle Fire, but for another $200 I can have a fully-functioning PC, right?

Seems like the right move.

Maybe I'm wrong.

If you want a fully-functioning PC, the MS Surface would be the one to get, it's the only one that size with a full desktop OS. We put one through its paces at my workplace, and it's quite good... but you will have some tradeoff, mainly that it's noticeably heavier than a mobile OS-based tablet. The most impressive thing may have been the cover/keyboard, which felt much sturdier than I expected, and was surprisingly comfortable to type on.

If it's only for books and movies, maybe that's not what you want. I'd say go try out a few and see what feels most comfortable to use, maybe talk to a few people whose usage pattern is similar to yours.

I got a kindle for my birthday a couple years ago and the strange thing is I read more than ever, just not on the kindle. It's great for living overseas/traveling, like an ipod or computer is for storing music. No one wants to lug around 40 records in their suitcase, nor 40 books. But most of the books I read are not on kindle so... I use it mainly as a dictionary now.

So laugh all you want...but I ended up copping this:

With a $50 rebate it came to 40 bucks, delivered.

the screen is shit, but it's exactly what I wanted.
