Relax guys. I don't give a damn about comparisons. If the music is good, it's good. I love Stereolab, I do have a lot of their recent stuff, I have seen them perform in recent years, I just don't put the newer albums on that often. They often seem like regurgitations of earlier material. Maybe I'm jaded, sorry.





OK, admitted, I don't have the latest one. Give me a good sales pitch and maybe my interest in Stereolab will be rekindled. I want to believe.

both bands based their entire rep / steeze / sound / hipster quotient / CAREERS on the back of some pretty slick fast ones they pulled over a massively naive / clueless indyrock audience.

Sorry to keep this going, but...

I think the key phrase here is "hipster quotent"; you're so blinded by your dubious hatting (pun intended... you sound straight up racialist) that you're acting as if these groups are about fashion and trends... Whatever dude. Few "indyrock" figures have been more open and magnanamous about sharing their love of all musics, wearing their influences on their sleeves and popularizing the fuck out of their favorites. I actually can't think of anyone in 90s indie who did more to educate his audience than Tim Gane. And having met him personally I can say he's about the sweetest, most humble person in the world. But I suppose for some people no amount of proper respect given is enough when the music is aimed at that massively naive / clueless indyrock audience.

a greatest hits record? a GREATEST HITS RECORD?!?!?

first learned about thee midniters/whittier blvd. a long time back due to "the stones" connection...forgive me. heard giants for the first time (complete with live version of walk on by) that floored me and got me itching for that record.

too expensive. too rinked. too 80s vinyl reissue. the horror.

finally i happened upon the above-scanned record..a non-rhino comp from 1983 that included "walk on by"--it was cheap enough, so why not?

this record is great, including some notable covers--never gonna give you up has an excessively dour harmonizing tone that fits the mood of the song perfectly. a killer lo-fi recording of tighten up. and a studio version of walk on by--which to my ears beats the live version hands-down...and made me realize that the giants version actually begins with the last four notes of--yep, tighten up.

one of my favorite records, and one i can listen to start to finish.
