So I know of a few solid Cuban funk/soul albums on Areito:<b, 21<b, 21Orquesta Riverside: S/T<b, 21Grupo Los Yoyi: Yoyi (off the wall!)<b, 21<b, 21And I finally copped that Los Van Van + Juan Formel LP (the one that inexplicably sold for nearly $250 the other month)<b, 21<b, 21Any other joints people would recommend?<b, 21<b, 21or really, I'm interested in any Cuban label albums for jazz, Latin, etc.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Irakere LP - I've had that for a minute. I like "Bacalao" but I've always been more partial to Riverside's "En Casa Del Trompo No Bailes" more in terms of straight funk cuts. <b, 21<b, 21I'll have to check for that salsa joint.

I really like this one:<b, 21 <b, 21<img src="http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/cp_images/c4722.jpg"1 <b, 21<b, 21Wasn't it featured on Si Para Usted?

<font class="post"1<b, 21<b, 21Ah yeah, I forgot the Torres LP - "Son a Propulsion" is the shit! <b, 21<b, 21How's his other stuff? I only know "Algo Nuevo."

I only have a couple of albums of Areito but I'm a big fan of this one by Groupa Moncada (or something like that - spelling?). Not really soul or funk-influenced but really beautiful stuff.

I starting getting into Areito about 6 years ago when I found a gang of records at a thrift here in Miami. I'm cuban and grew up in Miami and never really realized the influence that US music had on the island. Here's a mix I did for a waxidermy CD swap a few years ago. Styles range from folk,psych,funk,son,jazz,disco...I don't have a tracklist, but I remember most of the tracks if anyone want specifics. <b, 21<b, 21<b, 21I'm in the middle of a session right now, but will post a few personal faves later.

I scoured through Havana last autumn and only managed to find one other Torres LP, beat the F*ck up and unlistenable I'm afraid. so yeah, I'm wondering the same

Absoul, this thread reminds me I need to return that JP Torres LP to you (+the Alrune Rod a.o.).<b, 21It's been too long now, I'm a bit embarrased <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" 21<b, 21<b, 21I found this Grupo Moncada last year<b, 21<img src="http://i12.ebayimg.com/04/i/000/fe/96/3a61_1.JPG"1<b, 21but I let it go. Mistake? I think it's actually still sitting in the cheapo bin at the shop I sold it to.

I have that Grupo Moncada - it's commie folk, not all that interesting musically to my recollection<b, 21<b, 21Torres has at least 3 or 4 other lps similar to that Super-Son one - I bought 3 this past summer in Toronto

RAD<b, 21<img src="http://www.popsike.com/pix/20050619/4740744442.jpg"1<b, 21<b, 21also<b, 21these dudes shred but no funk per se, which is how this discussion is heading. great folk and fuzz psych moves:<b, 21<img src="http://www.popsike.com/pix/20040910/4036534214.jpg"1

<font class="post"1<b, 21<b, 21Never heard the Algo Nuevo so I'm not sure how it fares against his other releases but the best so far that I've heard are the aforementioned "Super Son" (Yes, 'Son a Propulsion' is the ish) and these two below, both of which were comped for Si Para Usted...<b, 21<b, 21<img src="http://ring.cdandlp.com/jetrecords/photo_grande/99618530.jpg"1<b, 21<b, 21One of my favorite cuban releases, period. The title track cooks!<b, 21<b, 21<img src="http://ring.cdandlp.com/afrocuban/photo_moyenne/4410332.jpg"1<b, 21<b, 21This is one of his later albums, I believe, approaching the disco era at the end of the 70's... Couple dancefloor burners here, heavy on the electronics.<b, 21<b, 21Grupo Monumental also has a couple solid releases, one of which's title was used for the title of the comp mentioned above...

Here's a mix I made a while back with a cashe of Cuban records that I had found in the remote forest region of Guinea. Click on the image to listen:00:00 Grupo Monumental -limitacion

Oh ya... a Cuban defector I know says that Los Yoyi are an old Havana band that are still giggin.

i was under the impression that monumental had two records? i found one in a thrift store outside atl...the one where they are sitting on the letters. dope shit. used a chunk on aeiou2.<b, 21<b, 21i know cosmos in toronto gets a lot of cuban records.<b, 21<b, 21cosine on the three juanpablo joints. i got the cargo cover and the younggirl joint (i remember a song called "hierro" or hielo? being real dope)
