Barq's is better. I used to get Barq's in the 2 liter bottles when I was a kid back in the 80's. The cans seem to hold more carbonate to me, maybe it's because we could never properly close the cap on the 2 liters correctly! More bubbles the better... and yes, A&W is waaaaay to sweet for me, it tastes more like candy that root beer.

Virgil's. They actually use real ingredients rather than flavor extracts, which is what most of them rely on now, unfortunately. Full disclosure: when my grandfather was still around, he used to make root beer, which was amazing and pretty much spoiled my ability to enjoy most bottled root beers. The recipe died with him, but my uncle still has all of his equipment, so we've decided to try and re-engineer it as best we can.

Also, there's a brand called Bundaberg that's really good. I'm sure some of the Aussies here would know it (it's made there).

I love how little kids go ape shit over the stuff.

Exactly why I don't drink it much anymore, way too much sugar.

1 can of A&W has 45g of sugar!

I stopped drinking diet sodas a year or do ago(caffeine and chemicals related) and decided to allow myself 2 regular sugar sodas a month and it is usually always Root Beer as my choice (a Brarq's with my also twice monthly rationed Top's cheeseburger). Love it. Ginger Ale comes in second.

Fentimans ginger beer is great. No bullshit ingredients, made from real herbs etc. Has a good fiery kick in it, like that fact that it's not too sweet. First time a tasted this, I was surprised by the spiciness. When you get over from the first kick, you'll get very quickly addicted to this stuff.

Edit. sort of misread the topic. I can still recommend this to anyone who likes taste of ginger. You can find Fentimans also from amazon.com (is quite expensive at the moment though).
