I've heard ultra expensive turntables before. I only noticed a difference when the turntable was part of an even more expensive hifi set-up, in which case it was just plain face-melting sound.
Today's music production is far more sophisticated than it was 25 years ago and nothing brings this home faster than listening to old records. Many sound flat, boring and almost crude.
It'd be useful just to have someone report sales figures. "5 to 1" as a ratio doesn't communicate shit if you have no idea what the baseline is.
Most companies don't sell stand-alone CD players anymore, so most people are buying DVD players that play CD's. That's fine, but that also means the technology to improve CD playback is at a standstill, and essentially the quality of standalone players has gradually become worse. This probably says more about the horribleness of CD player sales than it does about the health of turntable sales.
Have to disagree, the turntable is the most important. If the turntable isn't happening the rest is wasted money.amp and speakers is the best place to drop a lot of money.

Nah, it probably will become more of a niche thing and less widely available but its not going away anytime soon. There was actually an interesting article on this in Rolling Stone recently. As for the article; I am predicting the death of CDs with in 5 years.

True. And these people will be no different or any more lame than record collectors, eitherIn 30 years there will be hipsters with walls of shelves of plastic jewel cases cursing he scratch in their otherwise near mint copy of the first Ween album.
