Your Listing of All-Time Best Hip-Hop Beats

No RZA so far? Impossible for me to pick out a definitive top 10, but here's some that really stuck with me over the years
  • Shadowboxing
  • Ice Cream
  • Verbal Intercourse
  • You Ain't A Killer - Big Pun
  • Do You Believe - Beatnuts
  • Above The Clouds - Gangstarr
  • Ain't No Fun - Snoop
  • Spottieottiedopalicious- Outkast
  • Chonkyfire - Outkast
  • Survival Of The Fittest - Mobb Deep
  • Fakin The Funk - Main Source
  • Around The Way Girl- LL
  • Luck Of Lucien - Tribe
  • Action (remix) - Saukrates
Not the most diverse list, chronologically or geographically, but what can I say; all of these take me back to big neighborhood freestyle sessions in high school, getting loose on a summer friday, with everyone I knew packed in the same room until the neighbors called.

In no particular order.. some of my favorites
  • Nas - Memory Lane
  • Gangstarr - Above The Clouds
  • MC Eiht - All For The Money
  • Ice T - New Jack Hustler
  • Mobb Deep & G Rap - The Realist
  • Pete Rock & CL - Straighten It Out
  • Dr Dre & Snoop - Deep Cover
  • M.O.P. - Face Off 2k
  • Jay Z - Dear Summer
  • Organized Konfusion - Bring it On (Buckwild Remix)

Serious? Just sayin, despite the in hindsight terrible American accent, this was my joint BITD. Derek B RIP.

Ok, here's a quick list (first to come into my head):

  • EMPD: So Whatcha Sayin' (definitely top 3 in any list)
  • Beatnuts: No Equal
  • ATCQ: Check The Rhyme
  • PE: Rebel Without A Pause
  • Gangstarr: DWYCK
  • Diamond D: Freestyle (yo that's the shit)
  • Hijack: Style Wars
  • Pharoe Monch: Simon Says
  • Ultramagnetic MC's: Papa Large (East Coast Remix)
  • Jeru The Damaja: Come Clean
  • BDP: South Bronx

Really struggled thinking of anything recent that qualifies for 'all time best beat' status. Probably cos I was a teen/early 20's when those all dropped, and lets face it, everything that comes after that time of your life is going to pale in comparison.

The song itself was never my joint. But the bonus bass instrumental, or whatever it's called on the 12", is a classic used in a million NOLA bounce songs.

Shadowboxing
Ice Cream
Verbal Intercourse

GZA's "4th Chamber" (with the dark, spaghetti western soundtrack like organ), Gravediggaz' "Elimination Process" (with the creepy "laaaa....." vocal loop and the harpsichord) and the way he flipped the Underdog intro are among my favorite RZA beats.

Not in order, just some that I like:
  • The entire INI album.
  • ED OG " I got to have it"
  • Group Home " Supa star"
  • T.R.O.Y.
  • Shook Ones
  • Stezo " It's my turn" ( Credit to Dooley O for finding the skull snaps break)
  • EPMD: " So What Cha Sayin"
  • First two Show and AG albums.
  • Early K-Def
  • Muggs on the first Cypress album was sick. The Funkdooibiest stuff too. Still dig Soul Assassins back in the day.
  • Gangstarr - Just to Get a Rep
Too many to list. Lately I've been digging Damu The Fudgemunk. 1993 perfected.

Beats I can listen to over & over:
  • Real Live - Real Live remix
  • N.W.A. - Quiet On Tha Set
  • Tribe Called Quest - Lyrics To Go

  • Biggie - Unbelievable
  • Public Enemy - Prophets Of Rage
  • The Pharcyde - Pork
