Ranked #160 in the Soul Strut 200
Ambitious politically charged psychedelic soul jazz LP from Coltrane collaborator Archie Shepp. Shepp veers from his straight ahead spiritual jazz leanings and tackles the controversial topic of prisoner rights of the time. The album is a nice mix of tense funk "Attica Blues", blaxploitation soundtrack style big band jazz "Blues For Brother George Jackson", and gorgeous soul jazz ballads "Steam (Part 1)". Attica Blues was Shepp's What's Going On? Nothing he did before or after match the intensity and vision of this record.
