Arsonists - As The World Burns

As The World Burns LP (1999)

    Matador

1999s As The World Burns consistently made lists on Soul Strut as indie hip hop that holds up.  Consisting of five MCs with diverse lyrical styles, Arsonists bring an underground New York hip hop flava while staying committed to the five elements of old school hip hop.  Think the aggressiveness of Wu-Tang crossed with the zaniness of Pharcyde.  Soul Stut favorites include the Wu-esque "Blaze",  the jazzy styles of "Session,"  the sinister "Halloween", and the reminiscent "Flashback".  Arsonists never caught fire and broke up in 2001.  Signing to an indie rock lable like Matador probably wasn't the wisest move.  Fortunately, real hip hop fans got a wildly entertaining album from it all.
