Honky Tonk Popcorn / Honky Tonk 45 (1969)

    King Records

During the late 60s, kitschy Hammond organ instrumentalist and band leader Bill Doggett got a hip James Brown makeover collaborating with his newly revamped J.B.'s lineup for this two sider funky jazz masterpiece on King Records. Side A "Honky Tonk Popcorn" is a fast paced overdriven guitar driven groover with Doggett chugging along on Hammond rhythm and James Brown laying down his patented high pitched screeches and squeals.  Side B's "Honky Tonk" (not to be confused with his 50s version) unveils one of my personal favorite bass lines of all time famously lifted by The Beatnuts for "Are You Ready".  This one enjoys some lead lines by Doggett and a much more steady groove. This 45 is the perfect gateway drug for those who are new to this funk 45 game (god help you!).
