the last song you played on repeat

I watched a documentary about Manguebeat, focused on Chico Science and Nação Zumbi, when I was out of commission last week. So that inspired me to listen to this LP for my first hike of the year to get back in the swing of things. This song in particular I put on repeat.

Goodbye 2025. Soul Strut lives on in 2026.

I'm doing the same; saving for a trip to the Pantanal and Foz Do Iguaçu in May. And my brother has been begging me to visit him in Boston. I've never been east of the Rockies, so I'll likely do that later this year after the Brazilian trip. I live in northeast Los Angeles. Feel free to reach...

Goodbye 2025. Soul Strut lives on in 2026.

2025 wasn't the greatest year for me to be honest: a lot of missed opportunities, mostly of my own doing due to struggles with alcoholism. 2026 started out rough as I was diagnosed with a rhabdomyolysis after having a seizure at work last Monday and I spent the past week and a half in the...

    2025 RIPs

Two of my favorites I like to listen to while pedalling around or hiking. Clube da Esquina was my gateway.

    Record collecting still popular?

My gateway, like many of you, was the initial punch of "Wow! That was used for ____!". Both of my parents introduced me to soul and folk rock when I was into rap as a teenager. Then came what was, and still is, played Los Angeles public radio and, for example, "world music" curated by David...

    your best dollar bin find?

Not "dollar" finds but the closest to it would be The Cult's "The Mail Must Go Through" (a Strutter at a meetup back in the day commented, "he's singing about delivering mail?!?", which made me laugh) or Médico Doktor Vibes (at a furniture store, of all places). And thanks to the bartender in...

Old movies you've only seen recently...

Wow, I never heard about that. Not the same, but it brings to mind the child actor in "Pixote" (great film, but very depressing) who was killed by the police seven years later. My brother gifted me a year's subscription to the Criterion Channel. One of the films he suggested was "House Of...

They say “yacht rock” was coined in 2005

Really. It reminds me that Carol Kaye said recently that she doesn't like the name "The Wrecking Crew".

    Donald Fagen despises the phrase.

I have never heard about her before but I dig this.

    2025 RIPs

'Diana' is Gap, his brother. "The Hill Where The Lord Hides" is one of my favorite songs I like to listen to while going hiking. Funk Inc. did a fantastic cover of it. Check out The National Gallery, too...
