2025 RIPs

Que Sera, Sera for sure. Hot Fun... still hits everytime too. ALBUMS of material, and even the later projects had some joints. I just played this one out the other night:

I was once trading records with a famous funk collectro/dj after getting back from Kenya with some extra copies of things. Sly came up (I think the Abaco Dream 7"?) and he mentioned that he knew the hits but hadn't really given the albums a good listen before. It was sort of :whoa: given his specialty.

Another story: I'm working with a student in my research lab on a study about the emotional response to Nipsey Hussle's death on social media across LA. He's really into hip-hop and one day earlier this year, he was like, 'it's Lent and I'm not listening to hip-hop for 40 days!' He was giving ish like Johnny Cash a first look and liking it. I suggested a few things and the clear winner was Riot. It gave me hope for the future in an otherwise bleak time.

Oh yeah, so I sent him a few albums I was listening to when I was his age:

Luke Vibert - Big Soup:

Sly & The Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin On:

James Brown - Black Caesar:

Primal Scream - Screamadelica:

RIP Brian Wilson - so glad he decided to take surf rock to the next level.

My dad introduced me to both Sly and the Beach Boys and was a big fan of both.

I read this article about Brian's lost songs and found it amusing:

RIP Cavin Yarborough

Not a great recording, but I love seeing them recreate this live:

Hulk Hogan…. what?? omg this week has been crazy, between monday and friday…3 total legends lost, Ozzy, Theo, Hogan… damn

:whoa: Mandems dropping like flies. Can everyone please remain alive for a minute? Well, apart from...

Anyway... Where do you start with the Blizzard of Ozz? I haven't visited the Sabbath catalogue since the 80s when it was currency amongst us scum kids on the estate, but listening to it now it had a manic, dark sound and Ozzy was the icing on the cake.

Regarding Chuck Mangione, outside of Dianna in the Autumn Wind, I constantly find his LPs in the cheap bins, and I'm usually underwhelmed. Which ones should I be checking for?

'Diana' is Gap, his brother. "The Hill Where The Lord Hides" is one of my favorite songs I like to listen to while going hiking. Funk Inc. did a fantastic cover of it.

Check out The National Gallery, too.

Gilberto Gil lost his daughter, Preta.

oh sweet jesus murphy… “Howie Tee”

holy shit… so many legends dying…. it puts “me getting older” into perspective.

RIP Eddie Palmieri - my college radio shows were named after Harlem River Drive (Bobbi, but also Eddie), so been listening to his catalogue for long time. Pure class.

What a loss to Latin music and music in general. Eddie is one of my favourite artists. So sad, but what a legacy he left behind. Sentido is a close 2nd to Lucumi-Macumba-Voodoo for me.
