On their self-titled LP, Jurassic 5 spent most of it and spelling out their own name and flexing the same lyrical skill as the Sugarhill Gang did with Rapper???s Delight.

Had this album dropped between 1982-1985, this probably would have been considered groundbreaking.

Isn't the definition of a "backpacker" someone who would listen to Deep Puddle Dynamics? Or am I wrongly updating the term for late 00's usage?

the Jurassic 5 ep is good. I didn't really think people questioned that all that much. Good, fun songs and it also features Lesson 6, which is a personal favorite of mine. I could care less if that makes me a backpacker.

Before Microwave pretty much killed the vinyl music industry, deejays would scour record stores looking for the instrumentals to this album. Premier???s production was simply stellar on Livin??? Proof.

Scour is such a weird choice of words. It was either in the Group Home, Gangstarr, or maybe Premier section. It's not like dudes were flipping through easy listening in case it got stashed in the wrong place.

OG backpackers who didn't just listen to stuff like Ultramagnetic MC's, Poor Righteous Teachers, Intelligent Hoodlum, UMC's, Black Moon, etc. when they came out, but also lived a life that went along with the music...would not have accepted the people who later jumped on what they mistakingly thought was a comparable bandwagon.

Oh, I see. When I was the hip-hop buyer at Gramaphone, I used "backpacker" as a catch-all term for cats who listened to underground hip-hop, even the white kids who like the art/emo/smart rap Anticon shit. It wasn't a perjorative term, but rather a quick way to distinguish between them and the DJ guys who were just looking for hot club shit.
