DJ Matthew Africa Plays Seven Inches

Terrible news. I didn't know him personally like some folks on here, but I always greatly appreciated his words and music. RIP

I remember in 1996 lugging records into KALX for Odub with Icewater, who pointed at Matthew and said "that's Matt Africa" in a real hushed, reverential tone haha. And music-wise the guy definitely warranted the reverence. Countless Tall Can Marathons and Hard As Fuck parties and Soul Boulders releases later and you realize this local music legend also happened to be just about the nicest fucking dude on the planet. Sharp as hell, too. Fuck he was just posting in "rap you're liking" last week! Sad day.

Was he still mongo slade or had he changed usernames? or am i wrong about mongo slade?

edit: i see what you're on about, that was actually a year ago.

he was mongo slade. our first (?) interaction on this site he dissed me. Wish someone could find that shit. I found a Roy Ayers record at Amoeba and was happy about it. He took me down a peg. Hahahahaha.

Dude had a GREAT sense of humor! A few times a month, something he posted here runs through my mind and I laugh to myself. For those that don't know, Matthew was a lawyer. And yes, Matthew Africa was his real name. Anyway, some Strutter was poppin' off about some legal shit that he was obviously unqualified to speak on. Ol' Mongo showed up in the thread and said, "Well, I have passed the bar and I know a lil' bit...."

And that was Matthew, in a nutshell. A highly educated hilarious motherfucker who could quote a rap lyric--pretty much any damn rap lyric--at the drop of a hat. And it would always put a smile on your face.

The first - and one of too few times - I met Matthew, I was DJing at PST in the bay and struggling with the flu through a pretty rough night. My first time using a rotary mixer, I accidentally unplugged the tables during Sake's set and later got berated by Warren Sapp and his girl in front of the club (yeah, one of those nights). But the one thing that stands out most from that night was seeing Matthew in the crowd and the sheer embarrassment of that being the first time he heard me play.

I had, and continue to have, the utmost respect for him not only as a DJ, but as a human being. The times he's shouted me out on his blog always made me feel like I was doing something right. This has been a huge loss for all of us. He will continue to live on through his music and our memories.

Rest In Peace, Matthew. You were gone too soon.

This is awful. Big fan of the dude's mixes, and his generousity of sharing knowledge on the board and PMs.

So sorry for all who knew him, a huge loss to the DJ community and community at large.

The thing about Matthew is that he was one of those dudes who had impeccable taste in records, probably amassed one of the best collections in the Bay (which is saying a lot) and never, ever preened or tried to act Big Willie Style about it. He was very much someone who managed to be both social yet private (if that makes sense and if you knew him, you'd know what I mean) and carried himself with a certain serious gravity but wasn't stonefaced and certainly not a dick.

I have very fond memories of going to Amoeba right when he was putting out new used stock and joining all the other grippers in trying to score some cool hip-hop promo. I also remember running into him at Ya Mama's Cafe near the Oakland/Berkeley and someone (might have been my friend Omar actually) couldn't believe that "Africa" was his actual birth name.

I also did a couple of KALX fundraiser shows with him, which is normally a total drag, but with Matthew, he'd always bring out his A-game records and just kill shit. Funny, sardonic guy on the mic too; I'll have to see if I can find one of our old show tapes and digitize it.

WHen I started my podcast, I wanted Matthew as my first guest. Listening to this now fills me with equal amounts happiness and sorrow. http://goo.gl/GhQw0

I saw jinx's post on Facebook literally seconds after he posted it. I just saw Matthews pic at first and immediately had a sick feeling in my stomach. I never actually met the guy in person, but I felt like I knew him just from his music, blog, record circles, etc. What a devastating loss. Definitely puts things into perspective. Records ain't shit compared to the fragility and beauty of life.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, friends and family.

RIP he touched so many people with his contagious passion for music

I am bumping the twee funk mix trying to cheer up

my thoughts go out to his family and friends

This is awfully tragic.

Quite the talent and seemingly the dude of all dudes.

I'm incredibly sorry for all those that were close to him.
