without looking too closely at the other people's lists, here are my fave albums of '72 off the head:
Bealtitude: Respect Yourself, Staple Singers
Scraps, NRBQ
What's Up Front That - Counts, Counts
Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose
Understanding, Bobby Womack
Let's Stay Together, Al Green
I'm Still In Love With You, Al Green
Talking Book, Stevie Wonder
Music Of My Mind, Stevie Wonder
Joe Quarterman & Free Soul
I Can See Clearly Now, Johnny Nash
Back Stabbers, O'Jays
The Politicians Featuring McKinley Jackson, the Politicians
Get On The Good Foot, James Brown
HONORABLE MENTION:
It's Just Begun, Jimmy Castor Bunch
Phase Two, Jimmy Castor Bunch
America Eats Its' Young, Funkadelic
A Lonely Man, Chi-Lites
The Sidewinders, the Sidewinders
Good Hearted Woman, Waylon Jennings
A Night On The Town, Brownsville Station
Starting All Over Again, Mel & Tim
On The Corner, Miles Davis
The Killer Rocks On, Jerry Lee Lewis
Bittersweet, Chairmen Of The Board
Velvert Turner Group
You will notice that this list is all soul, or soulish (hello, Miles)...that's how high the creativity was that year. Although there are some rockish acts I would have included (Commander Cody, Big Star, T. Rex, Mott the Hoople), the fact remains that R&B was kicking ass and stomping dick all over the place in 1972. Don't even get me started on the singles.
