If a Tree Falls on Soul Strut

Why should people Soul Strut as opposed to Facebook nowadays?

I know I'm biased but I've always liked the anonymity and the simplicity of forum based "mom and pop" web sites. It has a much more community feel to me... rather than doing all my shopping at Walmart.

I still check in daily as well for the most part... and although I am on facebook - fuck facebook, I still prefer forums over facebook any day.

I got facebook and it's funny to say but I think there's less genuine engagement even on SS's quieter times. I hit waxidermy as well. Facebook seems like a place to floss boring life milestones or promote gigs you want friends to come represent at but not a good place for focused shit talking or legit discussion. Being organized around a common interest helps I think.

I agree. 90% of my strut friends don't post on there any more and for the 10% Herm and Gary make up for it.

Also... As of today I am deleting myself slowly out of fb because I took the time to read this:

http://www.salimvirani.com/facebook/

"When the product is free, *you* are the merchandise".

Seriously, by simply continuing to use fb you consent to them selling pretty much everything you browse or type. FB Folls can always find me here or on Instagram. It really has exceeded its usefulness for me.

BTW they don't make it easy for you to delete everything in one go. You need to install Chrome and use Facebook Post Manager. And make sure to delete your account, not suspend it.

Place is like that giant sleeping Buddah. (It is happening everywhere though.)

Cummon cocksuckers!

If I am 64 and don't really care for 95% of the music posted on the OLD, populous Strut well then.....you can do better.

Stop stumble-sucking that somniferous soma buzz and get posting!

I've been recently freaked out by fb...

I thought it was just if I had the fb app or their messenger app on my phone. But it now starting to look like I don't even need it on my phone.

Want to be freaked out? Login into FB and go to settings and on the left go to Ads and then Ads based on my preferences/Visit ad preferences.

Start looking through your Interest and also the sections under Advertisers...

I was pretty sure fb was picking things off the phone mic. Not just things I was taking about with people. But even ads playing off my TV.

Anyways, the other day I log into fb to check if anything new has shown up after having the apps deleted from my phone and usually there has been nothing, but this time there was. It was Maldives. Which is fucked up because the subject has never come up ever in my convos or anything I've looked up on the net or come across. But a week ago we had friends over who were telling us about their vacation there. Then I realized that my wifes phone was on the table and she has both the fb app & messenger on her phone and I'm pretty sure that because we're tied together on fb as married, it added it to my fb ad preferences.

This is how everything will be. Your phone, TV, fridge. The mics will pickup audio around and be tied into ads.

I'm a super huge tech geek. But looking to retire away from technology might be a wise choice.

This ^^^.

I too am a tech geek for a living, so it's kind of interesting to see how this kind of data mining can be spun into "Adding value" to your life, in the form of "Why google trips to the Maldives? We already did that for you. We took the liberty of pre-booking a room on your anniversary too, so you don't miss out. Here are some suggestions for her anniversary present... She didn't like the one last year, she cussed it to her girls on messenger. By the way, we know you go to the client in place x today, so here's the weather and traffic there. You'll need to fill up too, your car has 1/4 tank left. "

But at the same time, think about how banks will calculate your credit rating based on how much you blow on sweets and fireworks on Amazon. Your credit rating or postcode already determines where some places put your phone calls in their answering queue - if they pick up at all.

Or how insurers will quote you on life plans when they know you've been buying hella beer and vitamin suppliments for years or moaned about your mum's alcoholism or how the car insurance man will feel about you chatting about maxing out your whip or why you talked about all those undeclared modifications, or mailing your wife relationship advice as it knows you've been visiting the old "One-handed surfing" websites.

It can hear you gurning one out every night and knows you last about three minutes. How about some discount Kleenex and herbal viagra? "Honest dear, don't leave, it was just snoring!!!" Few years, it'll be knocks on the door from the five-oh wondering why you are NOT signing up for this shit. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING etc.?

I take fairly good measures to mitigate fraud, phishing, viruses etc. but I think we are out of our leagues as individuals pitted with the wits and legal departments of the big internet presences. With great power, etc. The Ts&Cs of what they can do are unpoliced and are now so far-reaching that it's time to start switching at least some of it off for our own good.

Folls might feel it is the case in this day and age, but social media and the voluntary/involuntary information-nudity it entails, isn't compulsory.

YET.

Meanwhile, in another tab, I am watching Chrome kill off all my FB content. Every like, comment, share for the last 10 years. FB are notoriously cagey about their API (as it is their entire financial steez) so the process is slow, even when automated. Taking about an hour per year and I'm not a big sharer...

This ^^^.

In PA, they are FINALLY getting beer in grocery stores, but you got to have a license for them to scan. Like 70 year old getting carded and shit. No doubt that info will get passed on at some point to data miners.

Good analogy man. I certainly hope Soul Strut can continue to thrive as I've learned about so much music from this place. Anyways, all the best to you and your family bro.
