This thread proves how disconnected I am from office
life. I believed without hesitation you were telling
us that you had a meeting tomorrow with this guy:

I wasn't gonna say it, but now you did...... It was only for a split second before I deciphered "Human Resources".

This is looking promising.

hopefully they'll be merciful enough to do it with the quickness.

"we'd like to get some information and ask your opinion"...WTF is that?
maybe it was dadada then we'll "axe you".. then they realized their slip and said "axe u suttin"

Maybe they will be like "We were talking yesterday, and we wanted to know how you would FEEL about getting fired right now?"

Half my company (including me) got shitcanned yesterday, with no warning. Never saw it coming...

My advice, pack a flask, you just might need it.

ha.

There have been two different occasions at two different jobs where I got called into HR or the bosses office thinking I was going to get the ax and got a promotion. Last time I this happened it was a pretty damn significant raise too. This world that commands 40 hrs of my life each week is pretty

I had the same thing happen at least twice too. I was sure I was in trouble for something and instead got a 3% raise both times.

Bosses really shouldn't do that though... IE "I need to see you, come to my office". Like they couldn't just say, "You're getting a raise, let's go talk about it".

in my experience, a late-afternoon friday meeting with HR is not so good.

well it's at 9:30AM...the meeting request was like "we'd like to get some information and ask your opinion"...WTF is that?

I do spend a decent amount of time online, but nothing offensive or anything, I don't even check the board at work...I don't think I've done anything fireable but I guess we'll see...I've never been fired before!
Could it have anything to do with your benefits or something? It doesn't seem like they'd be "asking your opinion" about firing you. I'm sure you'll be aight.
This reminds me of a movie called American Job where this loser guy just goes from job to job and gets fired. Same guy who did American Movie.

At one point his boss makes him switch places with him and pretend that he is the boss. "Now what would you say to me in this situation". "I'm sorry we have to let me, uhm, you go". Dudes fires himself. Funny AND depressing at the same time.

but does anyone know of a person who actually got fired from using the net too much or surfing porn?
Yep, the poor lad could have been picked out of a line up for "employee most likely to be viewing porn at work" as well. I also know a guy who cleaned offices and did something unspeakable with his vacuum cleaner but that's too off topic.

Back on to the subject, if they're asking your opinion then it would seem likely that there is either:

a) Some kind of legal dispute between HR and another employee that they want to get your feedback on

or

b) They are looking at possible voluntary redundencies with pay offs and wanted to test the water with you

Good luck either way, on the plus side at least they didn't schedule it for Monday morning instead.

I know Big Brother can monitor online use, but does anyone know of a person who actually got fired from using the net too much or surfing porn?
yup me for internet use not porn, i got sacked from a shit office monkey job a few years ago, they spent 7 weeks monitoring my internet and email use (secret squirrel style) and then one friday just before xmas sat me down for a 'chat' and dumped this novels worth of emails and web pages on the table to line of 'it's not good...'. They even had emails of me talking to a friend about how i could get round their web filters, i just left there and then to meet my housemate who coincidentally also had just been sacked - we went to the pub.
On a side note whats the story with sackings/firings in the US? can they just sack you? here (uk) you would have a unfair dismissal case on your hands if there was even a hint of anything dodgy.

i think one dude here got fired when his IT guy printed out a soul strut thread of him talking trash about his job.

or did i dream that
it did happen. a thread about how much he hates his job followed by a thread on how he'd just lost it.
