I think dudes who came up soft can't stand soft music, dudes who came up hard NEED some soft music... to some degree, anyway. Makes sense to me.

"PLAY SOME OF THIS SADE SHIT....NOW!!!!!"

"Josie" is the best song.

Fuckin haters.

This is the day of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past

You call me a fool
You say it's a crazy scheme
This one's for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line

I'll learn to work the saxaphone
I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
And I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home

(refrain)
This is the night of the expanding man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be

sometimes hood is not an authority on good, seen.
Well, I would certainly have to agree with you there (I think moreso today than ever).
But that goes for all music.

And not for nothing, but I like (scratch that, love) Sade too.
Also, Sade is definitely not soft, duke!!

cosign...

Steely Dan is great... Aja is Great...

Sade is extraordinary...

Plus, whoever that guy is talking about "am I the only one on earth who gets a violent reaction anytime I hear Steely Dan" sounds softer than a Vassar grad.
Oh, schnap! Paul Nice just called you Arsenio!

nice one Marco. I'm a Steelyn Dan lover and am not ashamed to say it. Aja gets slapped on very often in my household.

This record (and some fine Colombian) got me through my freshman year in college (1980-81). I prefer The Royal Scam but still love this album twenty five years (and twenty five genres) later.

I see in my absence last week the haters got loose again. I will go over this one more time for the little dudes out there. What makes Steely Dan great is that there are writing some subersive type shit over soft rock jams. Do not be fooled by doctor's office format this music is nasty. If mother fuckers were playing this shit on acoustic guitars, you all would be calling them Dylanesque. Nice up to my fellow strutters who set them straight. Like the bumper sticker says, No Dan, No Peace- Know Dan, Know Peace

Daddy don't live in that New York City
No more
He don't celebrate Sunday on a Saturday night
No more
Daddy don't need no lock and key
For the piece he stowed
Out on Avenue D
Daddy don't live in that New York City
No more
Daddy don't drive in that Eldorado
No more
He don't travel on down to the neighborhood
Liquor store
Lucy still loves her coke and rum
But she sits alone
'Cause her daddy can't come
Daddy don't drive in that Eldorado
No more

Driving like a fool out to Hackensack
Drinking his dinner from a paper sack
He says I gotta see a joker
And I'll be right back

Daddy don't live in that New York City
No more
He can't get tight every night
Pass out on the barroom floor
Daddy can't get no fine cigar
But we know you're smoking
Wherever you are
Daddy don't live in that New York City
No more

Actually, these lyrics are from "Deacon Blues" (from Aja), which I do on occasion at karaoke.

Peace,

Slightly off topic but this is a pic of the dj booth in a resturant that a friend of mine plays at. They just had all these steely dan records on the wall. You can't see from the pic but under the decks are just stacks of records that you can dig through and play if you feel like.
