Maceo And All The King's Men - Doing Their Own Thing

Ranked #158 in the Soul Strut 200

During the early 70s, saxophonist Maceo Parker was fed up with how he was treated by James Brown. He eventually left, convincing the rest of the band to walk as well.  The result was Maceo And All The King's Men.  An album where they did "their own thing", churning out 10 funky jazz and soul burners including the show staple "Got To Get 'Cha," "Funky Women," "Better Half," and much more.  In my opinion, it blows away anything the J.B.'s did under contract.  James Brown was not pleased by the project, and as rumor has it, he paid radio stations not to play it.  Hence, its rarity and demand among collectors.
