Cover versions of Wichita Lineman?

luv this trak! i hve heard the walk on by cover compilation, arte thaer any others with different songs such as wichita lineman or smiling faces ect. ect ????

For the longest time, I figured that if this song was a hit with Glen Campbell, it had to be wack. I mean, really some bullshit toy-ass logic on my part but I'll cop to that.

I was listening to The Meters' version of this earlier tonight and that got me curious to dig around into the song's history and what not and I came across a review that described the song as the most perfect pop song ever (or something to that effect). I don't know about it being THE best? But it's pretty fucking perfect, regardless. I think the fact that it can be covered in practically any genre and still sound great is a testament to Webb's songwriting genius with it.

And going back through this thread, I do have to concur that Sammy Davis kind of kills it here.

I love this song. The Meters version is pretty tremendous, but Smokey Robinson also has a great version. The Sammy version is a little too busy for my tastes, the song has all of these nice minor key build ups that I think he adds too many rococo Sammy touches to.

Whilst the Glen Campbell can't be bettered, Brian Bennett did a very nice faux-funky-lite version that pops up delightfully on my iPod at opportune moments and I have a soft spot for the Feliciano vocal histrionic take.

I can be spotted murdering this song at Karaoke on the regular.

Love it so much I even got this tattoo:

Well, apart from thee worst guitar solo of all time. I'm not saying slather in a whole slick of EVH shred, but Jeebus.

A muted section of massed string crescendo and glissando would have been so perfect. Perhaps even into top. 5 Goat territory.

Cue someone talmbout the weariness and melancholy of the Campbell twang echoes the lyric blah di blah

On the J. Webb tip, there is fizzy-funky for-ya version of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" on the Enoch Light presents "Warm, Wild & Wonderful" by The NOW Sound of TONY MOTTOLA with the GROOVES LP. The one with the nip-sip cat woman cover.

Love the way his voice cracks on the first line. Wonderful song, sublime version.

Happier to blah about that descending five note bass intro.
