2004, in college, I joined facebook cause you can put in your classes and it'll show you other people who are in them without having to ask for their emails or dorm phones or whatever beforehand, ask for notes from missed classes etc.
2017 I'm reading 3+ degree-separated strangers' endorsements of a shed manufacturing company's corporate page, the ultra dregs of "shit if you overheard in person you would think is the boringest conversation possible" meme-generator posts written by people who make 13k/yr doing 70hrs a week putting impact font banners on upper and lower margins of 16:9 videos and go home wondering why they wanna shoot themselves, bragging life milestones from people I haven't spoken to in years, targeted ads that have evidently analyzed photos I'm tagged in for hair loss, mixed with the occasional thought, personal news or opinion of someone I actually value.
at least this shit, and the systems, nay, entire economies that are built around it, won't last our lifetimes.
