For me, if you're going to use a lot of spoken word snippets try not to make it too comical. There's a world of youtoob out there so getting a consistent theme to the samples shouldn't be difficult either.

Without saying you need to be a DJ Shadow biter, the stuff he uses on his tracks is usually fairly serious (consciousness/political quotes etc) but also vague enough that the listener can put their own meaning into them.

Luke Vibert's rep would have, imho, been higher in the '90s if his productions hadn't been laced with silly/purile samples that on first listen are humourous but on repeat became a bit annoying.
