Panzah Zandahz - Butterfunk Concoction

DJ Mix : Panzah Zandahz - Butterfunk Concoction

Panzah Zandahz hails from upstate NY and has been on the Soul Strut periphery for years.  He is an extremely talented electronic musician in an age where they pop up nightly.  This mix was sent to us in 2005 and was an immediate favorite.  It’s an eclectic mix of Breaks , Sweet Soul , Funk Rock ,etc. in an age when you had to get your fingers dirty!

Otis Funkmeyer - DJ Demo

DJ Mix : Otis Funkmeyer - DJ Demo

My boy Steve, aka DJ Otis Funkmeyer, turned me onto funk in my college days. There was a time where he was an unemployed free spirit in NYC peddling demos to get DJ gigs. This demo pretty much sums up the choice cuts that coined his signature taste. Enjoy!

DJ Mix : Nrich - Tripping Through Tyme

For your listening consideration is a mix of rare, mainly small label, garage & heavy psych 45s. A Good third of these hail from the great state of Texas. It’s starts out very heavy and then segues quickly into more uptempo garage.

Nile Rodgers Mixed By Superix

DJ Mix : Nile Rodgers Mixed By Superix

Nile Rodgers has had a huge resurgence recently with his fascinating and candid auto-biography ‘Le Freak…’ and his stint with mega-club-hit misters Daft Punk… And for good reason, his compositions in and productions along with bass wizard Bernard Edwards were the backbone for many hip hop classics.  DJ Superix does a mighty swell job of exemplifying the man, the myths with this tightly flowing DJ mix.

Mo Majid - Wall of Fame Vol. 1

DJ Mix : Mo Majid - Wall of Fame Vol. 1

Mo Majid was a mainstay on the Soul Strut message board in the early days. As I recall he was a world class Ophthalmologist AND a world class digger in the mid 90s to early 00s. Weird combo, but it made for some trend setting drum break tapes that inspired a whole new generation of “Timmy Dig-a-lots”. No Mp3s, No boots, just raer vinyls.

Matthew Africa & DJ B. Cause - Soul Boulders 2

DJ Mix : Matthew Africa & DJ B. Cause - Soul Boulders 2

Matthew Africa you will truly be missed. Sending my condolences to his friends and loved ones. For those who aren’t familiar with Soul Boulders, here’s the story. Back in 2005, San Francisco’s DJ B.Cause posted a mind-blowing 10-minute mini-mix on the SoulStrut message board. The songs were exquisite but hard to pigeonhole—soulful and funky, but not purely funk or soul, slow, psychedelic, moody, maybe a little haunted. In other words, exactly my sound. DJ Matthew Africa sent him a message urging him either to finish the mix or to let Matthew hop on and collaborate with him on turning his ten minutes into something CD length. Matthew grabbed a dozen or so of his favorite records, figured out their sequence and recorded his half at B.Cause’s house one rainy afternoon. Once B.Cause fleshed out his half and massaged the whole thing a bit, we released it in the spring of 2006. It was his first commercial mix CD.

Private label jazz & modern soul mix. No release date [198?]. There is some water damage on the cover from what looks to be red wine, and there is some sand inside the jacket. Nothing but smooth sailing from start to finish.

DJ Mix : Maleet - Papi Chulo Breaks - Volume 1

I don’t know who started the trend (Beatnuts maybe) where hip hop producers would go goo goo for 60s/70s pop Latin records with what was called “moody loops”. Our boy Maleet raided every bodega back room and Mexican disco for as much of this type of heaven he could muster. We revisit this 2005 CD and channel our inner Psycho-Les.
