This mix is from a few years a go that I never got around to posting. Y’all know L. Dula aka Iron Feet and his knack to find interesting sampleable tid bits on oddball thrift store finds. Well, here ya go!
Soul Strut personality Nate Bizzo was an active crate digger back in the day who managed to get Keb Darge to come chill at his crib after a show… oh and make a rare funk mixtape that never saw the light of day…. Until today.
Bay area’s Justin Torres is a true 60s/70s soul music historian. The Break Up Letters, originally posted online in 2008 by Good Records NYC, is a heart wrenching mix of rare soul and funk. Also worth noting is that portions of this mix were culled from raw reels rescued from the vaults of famed Berkeley, CA distributor/record shop Music City. So there are songs on here that are completely unknown and unavailable on vinyl… The absolutely killer funk-psych burner “Choirs In My Teardrops” is perhaps the most criminal example of a record that never was, but Real Heads will notice the DJ Shadow-remixed “This Time” (here as “Untitled”) by, simply, “Joe”. This mix is the first appearance of the track and the Genesis of Shadow’s piece.

“Darmel’s House” is a mix of 1990s rap tracks from all over the map, including well-known underground classics and never heard before tape-only obscurities. Jonny Paycheck & DJ Icewater’s vision was one of those hazy afternoons when they’d cut out of school early and head to the homie’s house to get stoned and play tapes. Back in the day they didn’t have any boundaries to what was played, so that’s how they approached this mix. It’s slowed but not slopped, a little bit trippy but grounded in the realities of our time, and blended to perfection in a blunted state.
Impalaville is the creation of Soul Strut frequenter Johnny Paycheck aka the owner of Good Records NYC. Despite being located in NY however, the album is inspired by L.A. Chicano summer anthems: Low Rider Soul 4 Real. Rarity isn’t the point here (though there will definitely be songs you haven’t heard before) - it’s all about nailing a vibe. Pacheco sets up the mix as the best radio show you never heard - something you can imagine drifting out your car stereo as you cross the bridges of East L.A., 3pm sun blazing overhead.
Australian record dealer. DJ, beat digger John Idem used to spend many a time on Soul Strut before Facebook took over. I was going through a stack of CDs and came across this little treasure chest of 70s library funk / soundtrack music.
Joaquim Paulo was a Soul Strut staple in the early days. He was never afraid to mail over a CD from Portugal to have hosted on this site REAL AUDIO 52 kb/s style. This is a trip into rare Euro grooves. Originally posted on Soul Strut in 2003.
Ex-Conmen, rap super producer (De La Soul, 50 Cent, etc), and Soul Strut message board frequenter Jake One is back doing what he does best. Digging up gems and showcasing them to the world (see his successful modern soul ode the A-R Music Series.) He teams up with Baghatvinyl to unleash an hours worth of soul you might have possibly heard sampled (or maybe not).

This is Volume 4 of 4 from Rap Production wizard Jake One released in 2005 (when modern soul was still virgin territory). Nothing but the ill 80s modern soul and funk.

Jake One is an accomplished hip hop producer who once called Soul Strut home for clandestine vinyl record tips and CD mix peddling. His AR series remains one of the best of the neo-modern soul revival era (if that even exists).
Good old fashion late 70s/early 80s disco and Rhythm & Gangsta.

This one was pulled out of the archives and I am scratching my head profusely as to why it was never posted. Justin Torres is legendary in Bay Area circles as a soul / funk historian and champion crate digger. One of his main focuses is funky gospel from the 60s / 70s time frame. He made this mix and it is an absolute face melter.
Iron Monkey mixes were an event on Soul Strut back in the early 00s. He ran the boutique label Motel Records which released such cult classics as Bombay the Hard Way and launched the career of eccentric solo artist Gary Wilson. Best be known that through being a label head, he unearthed some real gems from forgotten artists.
The Make Out Party takes up Side A with sweet soul, hard hitting funk 45s, and loner music fit for the most loyal stalker.

There was a time in the early to mid 00’s where crate diggers made DJ Shadow inspired instrumental hip hop. A spin off of that was slowed down, slightly triply style coined “Blazing Downtempo”. Soul Strut regular and Texas based producer Hi-C (along with co-conspirator Wilson) created a series of cool 45s that demo’d such music as the magical band Rehash. This was a promotional mix for one of their releases in 2003 that ranges from Downtempo to Dub music to Jazz Funk?
