Hand picked records important to the history of Soul Strut.
For years, Billy Parker's legacy as a jazz drummer and band leader was a bit of a mystery. He had this lone spiritual jazz gem on Strata-East, but nothing credited before or after. With some investigating, this blog post at Never Enough Rhodes reveals that Parker devoted the rest of his music career to teaching after this record. With that said, he did make his mark with 1975's Freedom Of Speech collaborating with Cecil McBee on bass and the Bridgewater brothers on horns. The real treasure on here is the funky jazz groover "Get With It" complete with a memorable guest vocal performance by Dee Dee Bridgewater. Without getting too deep, the rest of the album has all the fixings of a strong spiritual Strata-East jazz outing.
