Leo's Sunshipp was suppoed to be the next big thing; a soulful, jazzy, disco funk supergroup formed by ex-Marvin Gaye backup singers. The sound is a mash up of mid 70s smoothed out soul and gooey jazz funk a la Roy Ayers. Vocalist and songwriter Johnny Simone tragically passed just four tracks into this debut. After much hesitation from bandmates, the album was eventually released with bonus instrumental versions filling in the gaps for a releasable LP. The album is most notable for the smacked out funk groover "Give Me The Sunshine". The track is smooth sailing soul draped with an unmistakeable, spooky synth line. The album also contains the original version of "Back for More" later immortalized by Al Johnson in the early 80s. One could only wonder what would of become of the Sunshipp. Unfortunately, we'll never know.
