and then there's Equatorial Guinea, that some might know from Dogs of War

...(formerly Zangaro, before the Christopher Walken coup)Yesterday, in a conversation with someone about immigrant communities in Los Angeles, I asked what is the difference between "Iranian" and "Persian". They're interchangeable, apparently.

if I remember correctly, Zangaro was the fictionized country. I have pulque to drink and tripa asada that needs eating but already bookmarked the wiki entry for this 2004 coup attempt for later reading, which turned this into a hard to believe case of art imitating life, being re-mixed by life yet again at the hands of some semi-obscure Thatcher offspring. Already another 21 years in the past by now...

My impression from friends in high school, though I'm not sure I ever flat-out asked, was that being a part of the "axis of evil" and so on was an influence on calling yourself Persian rather than Iranian. I'm sure there's more to it than that but I'm also confident that plays a part.

are you guys trolling or is this real? Without the US, Iran would still be Persia and a whole lot of other bad shit would have never happened, like the Taliban for example.

Strange. As Americans we pride ourselves in our knowledge of geography. Although looking back I I did fail “the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of English empire and American hegemony” in the 6th grade which was the only class you were allowed to take if you didn’t want to do PE. It was the 80s and funding for arts and music had all but dried up, so those were my two choices and I’ve never been athletic.

Haha, I knew that Frederick Forsyth made up the country name and I am partially familiar with the history of Persia. I just was confused about the proper demonym since the woman who cuts my hair uses one and the person I was talking to on Saturday used the other.I never knew about the 2004 attempt in Equatorial Guinea before even though I have always liked reading about small countries since I was a kid. Learn something new everyday.

in 2004 this made the news for a couple days due to the Thatcher connection and because it seemed to be scripted right out of Dogs of War. E. Guinea's presídent has been in power since 1982 btw and holds the record as Africa's longest serving dictator.

Yeah, the Persian v Iranian thing in the US is real. I knew a guy from Chicago who always said he was Persian, and he explained it with that exact reason - that people looked at you funny if you said you were Iranian.

Also, re: Lambada. Just like with the mango and the banana, 99% of Brazilians go into shock when they discover that Chorando Se Foi isn't actually native to Brazil. I personally like to see how music from the Andes travels down the Amazon and morphs into something else by the time it reaches the Brazilian coast. There's some music from Haiti too that shows up in Brazilian pop without people knowing where it came from.

I'd class it as far, far worse than Putin, but I'm open to hair-splitting

its 2025, like where the fuck did the time go… jesus i remember “worrying about y2k” and it seemed like a few months ago… as time rolls by, it reminds me of when i used to think my mom was old (when i was younger) and she was only 40yrs old… ugh. i dont mind getting old but man it seems like life is flying by after buying a house and having kids..

You get to the point of wondering how much material shit you need to have around when you need space back. Space is way more valuable than t3h Raer.

I know, right? ...

Unless you have a RAJ-style music barn.

oh shit i just realized this happened 8 years ago! :whoa:

so many highlights, including prince jammy literally riding the boards the whole time and beenie man's reaction to hearing that johnny osbourne was in the room.

Just recently found out that Hans Zimmer was in the first music video ever played on MTV. Dude played keyboard for Video Killed the Radio Star.

He was also on the early Ultravox stuff iirc.

Googled it; he wasn't a member but did the synth programming.

I did not know until fairly recently that Blame It On The Boogie by the Jackson 5 is a cover version of a German record from Paderborn:

I had not noticed until about few months ago that Boogie Wonderland was not written by EW&F let alone did I know this demo by the original songwriters exists:

It hadn’t occurred to me until very recently that “It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over by Lenny Kravitz is a rip off of That’s The Way Of The World by EW&F:
