With the release of the movie Cadillac Records, DJ Concept felt it was time to pay tribute to one of the greatest Blues labels of all times, Chess Records. This is just a very small sampling of the huge catalog released by the Chess brothers, Leonard and Philip Chess. Grab some bourbon and relax.

70+ minutes of modern soul magic mixed by DJ Big Jacks This is the first time DJ Big Jacks has dropped a release of this kind featuring 70 + minutes of modern soul magic from the late 70′s and early 80′s. While certain tracks have been sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Dilla, and Madlib among others, the focus here is not who has sampled what. Black Magic spotlights the original music itself, as a collection of personal favourites from the era mixed by Big Jacks and created for the lover in you.

Deep & Soulful Blues with a Bitter Bite. Originally posted on Soul Strut Thursday, January 20, 2011
A mix of melancholic sweet soul that I would have picked out the basement jukebox myself if I was on my 5th beer and wavering between the sting of heartbreak and the healing nostalgia of true love.

Diplo (yes THEE Diplo) was once a fledgling DJ from Philly who hung around the Soul Strut message boards sharing beats and talking records. Him and his partner and crime Tripledouble released two Brainfreeze-esque breaks / samples mixes under the moniker AEIOU. This is the more acclaimed of the two… a wonderfully pieced-together masterpiece of psych, rock, Stinky Steve ramblings, and drum breaks that’ll satisfy famished hip hop producers. Decoding thread here.

Before Diplo was selling out arenas, starring in Blackberry commercials, and making cameos on 22 Jump Street, the Soul Strut forums were his ground zero for coming up on records, culture, DJ Shadow-like instrumentals. This 2003 mix embodies his Hollertronix Philadelphia parties and put him on the map as a SERIOUS taste maker and selector.
“A mix of Electro, Baltimore Club, Crunk Dirty South Hip Hop, 80’s Dance and Hip Hop. this was before SERATO too, so it was ALL VINYL, all live blends. This is what you call a GAME CHANGER!”
Self professed Brazilian music addict Diego submitted this killer mix in 2011. He somehow scammed his way onto an airplane and ended up in Sao Paulo & Rio with a copy of Caetano’s Tropical Truth in his backpack. There he made some great new friends and found some very old records. From people slinging vinyl at bars, colorful Sao Paulo flea markets and a very experimental record store in Lapa, he came up on some stuff he never heard before. Enjoy the results!
Soul Strut had the pleasure of hosting this mix from producer / DJ Delay in 2005. Tons of uptempo drum breaks, psych rock, dusty vinyl treasures, and foreign isht. Another personal fave from the Soul Strut vault!
Deep Sang aka DJ Holiday from DC came out of nowhere with this mix. As a disco funk afficiando, I was taken aback with some of the hot joints on this one! The mix starts with some sure shots then makes its way into some raer fire!
Added to Soul Strut in 2007
This was a mix featured on the site almost 10 years a go and remains one of my favorite mixes to this day. This is the full-length version with “better” sound quality. Dcastillo blends lots of b-boy classics and raers to make this an SS masterpiece.
Some uptempo classic boom bap for old American men to grill to, or for younger Euromen to sing along to whilst making rapp hands in a sweaty Euroclub.

A pretty eclectic selection here. I know a bunch of these tracks are available on other mixes or comps, but there are definitely a handful that, as far as I know, are unavailable anywhere else. I had trouble culling the selection down, so you’ll find that this mix is a bit longer than usual. But if you’re into this sort of stuff that shouldn’t be a problem. This mix is 100% recorded form original vinyl, so pardon the crackle and enjoy!
