To commemorate our 20th live stream, we turn the clock back to the early 2000s when we worshipped the ultimate crate digger DJ Shadow and his unique brand of sample based instrumental hip hop that influenced a legion of 45 based blazing downtempo off shoots. Get your MPCs ready as Raj spins classic and obscure samples used by shadow on his early work. It’s all vinyl and all live.

Here is a selection of some of the finest roller boogie, disco rap, and electro funk 12s from DJ Return’s crates. Its not often he gets to play sets that consist just of joints from from the 1977-1985 era (my favorite period of music), so this has been a real pleasure for him to make.

In 2001, I was a baby digger. Buying anything and everything that had something sample able on it. Common, rare, next Tuesday, it was all viewed on the same playing field. This mix is me farting around for a half hour getting used to sound editing software and Technics turntables. The CD I transferred this from did not get much love and has its digital skipping in parts. But alas, it is salvaged and archived!
Otis Funkmeyer is one of the original Soul Strut DJs. First appearing on this site in 2000! After a several year hiatus, he is FINALLY back with another solid rare soul / funk mix. Prepare for the mind melt!

DJ Morse Code is now an internationally recognized super DJ, but back in his formative years, he was on the Soul Strut message boards linking up with people to trade records and talk techniques.
This mix embodies the 70s fusion type records made popular in Bay area rap records and Jay Dilla’s Pharcyde days.
It’s fusion, batches.
This was sent to us in 2008 from talented funk Bassist turned DJ Miles Tackett from Breakestra. If you need a solid introduction to raw heavy funky soul, this is it. It can be played out without nausea.

They say these type of mixes are dead (more likely hibernation). Producers in hip hop today are more likely to use keyboard noises and Apple Loops than scour the records below used CDs in record stores for that elusive drum break that once opened vaginas. Oh well…. for those who still craves this lost art, Kool Breeze is here for you.
All Braeks, All Day. Originally posted on soul strut.com Thursday, December 23, 2010
DJ Kool Breez is a fixture in the Baltimore digging scene unearthing hip hop samples, drum breaks, funk, and interesting tid bits from every nook and cranny of every thrift store, antique mall, storage space, gym locker. This was originally added to Soul Strut in 2009 and it’s damn good!
A mix of Euro and foreign funk, library records and other assorted dark funk, rock and jazz.

DJ John Doe is best known as the one of the big funk 45 guys in Vegas and one of the headliners at the city’s legendary Get Back night. He’s been linked to guys like Shadow, Cut Chemist, and Dante Carfagna so you know he is clued in on the HEAT! This mix does not disappoint for those who like their funk and soul deep and hard hitting.
Funk, Soul, Weird, Whatever. This is a soundtrack to imaginary films.

Here’s a funky reggae/rocksteady mix by Belgium based dj’s Dj Iron & D-purpose. Contains a lot of reggaefied covers of classic soul/jazz/funk tunes.
The vault’s open! We’re taking this back to 2002 when DJ High-C (of the Texas DJ crew Rehash) and I would swap beat digging mixes to post on our fledgling crate digging web sites (streamed Real Audio style). Loads of funky soul and jazz lifted off original vinyl.
Canadian-native DJ Greentea was one of the first Internet-era diggers that showed the world how amazing 60s and 70s foreign library and soundtrack music really was. This mix was released in the early 2000s when info was scarce and most of these records, a mystery.
